Paint stripping
Hi all,
I normally only use automotive spray paints for my models. Over the years I have done some botched spray jobs. I about to try Dot 4 brake fluid to rescue some old projects. Just some questions for all those who have tried this method, to save my moral conscience: 1) Where or how do you dispose of the brake fluid after you have achieved your aims? 2) How effective is this method? Grateful for any comments. Cheers. Exhaust Smoke |

Have you looked in the FAQ? I'm not shure if that method works on automotive paint. I think somone said you should use dot three brake fluid. I think somone also said the brake fluid is reusable. I hope this is of some help?

Brake fluid is pretty fair for removing paint, but csc is what I'd recommend. The couple of times I used brake fluid, it made a big mess and it smelled really bad. I just poured it down the drain when I was done.

I use brake fluid (unfortunately, quite often
) and it worked on pretty much every paint I've used. As for disposing of it, don't know, never had to to date, but I think I'll pur it into an empty oil canister and dispose of it at a gas station (in this counrty you take used motor oil, car batteries, and other dangerous stuff to certain gas stations and they dispose of it in a proper way)

As you are in the UK, I suggest Halfords generic Brake and Clutch fluid. Smells bad, and I wear late gloves when dealing with it, but it seems to strip paint very well. I put a few litres in an old plastic cake tin with a good lid, and use and old toothbrush to scrub the paint. I can strip a car in two days like this. I've never needed to get rid of it, seems to work good for ages. I sugest you try your local council tip, they usually have an area for old paint, oil etc.
