recovering starter mounting bolt dowels
I'm replacing the starter. Finally wouldn't kick in this morning at 7 AM. Easy enough to get the old one off. Just 2 mounting bolts and disconnect 2 electrical connections. I'll put the new one on as soon as I can recover the 2 dowels that help align the starter. They are round brass rings which are inserted in both the starter mounting bracket and the tranny housing. I can't puul them out of the old aluminum starter mounting bracket. I tried heat. I tried banging them. Any tricks?
Thanks. |

Vice grips! Grabbed 'em and spun 'em.

Re: recovering starter mounting bolt dowels
the vice-grip thing does work, i watched "over the shoulders" as a guy did that.
he squirted a bolt remover something or other also, and let it sit for about 30 minutes. it broke up the grime and rust, he said. good luck.

Re: recovering starter mounting bolt dowels
That's how I got them out. These things don't pop into my head as readily as someone who does it every day! The new starter has performed great so far. It's a NAPA reman unit, if you didn't see it in the other post...
