Poll: How long before changing spark plugs?

gap: .060"
torque: 13-17 Ft/Lbs

The Intrigue platinum plugs should last ~100,000 miles. That's about where my car is at now. I don't plan on changing my plugs this year and most likely not next year also. My Dad's 99 Intrigue 3.5L has almost double my mileage and has not changed plugs yet.

When did you change out your plugs (if ever?) on your Intrigue? (Poll)

Why and what brand did you goto? Platinum or other.

Re: Poll: How long before changing spark plugs?

I just replaced mine a couple of weeks ago, a 3.5 liter with 52,000 miles on it. I know they are good for 100,000 miles, but I didn't want to take a chance on plugs seizing up in an aluminum cylinder head. So I replaced the plugs with original AC Delco, and put a little anti-seize on the threads. Ran a compression check at the same time. The lowest was 200 and the highest was 210.

Re: Poll: How long before changing spark plugs?

My 2000 has 126k and the plugs havent been changed yet, gonna do it this week with the alternator. Hope they arent siezed. I had a 98 and never had the plugs changed, traded it with 230K on it. Not the best idea but the motor ran strong and outlasted everything else on the car. All problems with it were normal wear and tear except the new tranny at 160K.

Your car your choice but it would be a very good idea to change them now.
If you let them go to long they can burn a hole in piston or you may never get the plugs out.
Look at the gas you are going to save.

Re: Poll: How long before changing spark plugs?

my dad has 150k miles + on his 99 and still gets 30+mpg. Really the prices for these platinum plugs are not that bad, I was expecting $10+ a pop but they are under $3-5 at the Rock.

My car drives awesome and it's even better after changing the coolant? = I don't want to ruin what I got. Maybe next year for new plugs.

My 1966 Dodge Charger just had it's plugs changed and I noticed a huge improvement. Plugs aren't under a $1 anymore, but they are made better and have more copper. = It's worth the change.

I remember when the split electrode splitfire spark plugs came out (1990?)
and I thought those plugs were not worth the extra $$$$.

Notice the gap difference .050" typical <--> .060" Intrigue. And some of these plugs are not gappable (you do not gap these type plugs).

I will vouch for the cheap Champion Copper Plus at $1.35 a piece (at a .035" gap) = Worked good in my 440ci, but for the Intrigue I would definately go with Platinum since it is a performance engine and almost double the gap .060" (trust GM).

I'm just joking, What the hell do I know about spark plugs or ignition systems? (I still think ignition coils are pretty) Anybody want to try a .065" .070" .080" gap in their Intrigue?

Re: Poll: How long before changing spark plugs?

Stick with AC Delco. GM designed these engines with GM factory parts in mind...they didn't spend millions of dollars in development just to have a factory part pulled and replaced with another manufacturer's part with different (although slightly) specifications.

Really? I have a '99 with 53K and have never seen more than about 25.5. Thats with the "shortstar" 3.5L.

Re: Poll: How long before changing spark plugs?

yeah, he got the 3.5L, but keeps it 55mph (or less) to get that 30+mpg. I think he got 33 or 34 mpg on a trip once. Around town you are not going to get anything near 30mpg. Air out those tires to 36psi (or more) also.

Many smaller cars barely get 30mpg.

I am convinced my Intrigue could also get 30+ mpg, but that kind of takes the fun out of paying $3 a gallon for gas.

Re: Poll: How long before changing spark plugs?

I put the bosch plat. in. We drove down to Florida this year. We were driving 75-80ish & we got 31 mpg. Except for in Mn. We have the 10% ethenal so the mileage dropped there. 166,000 on the her.

You would get better mileage if you would drive in "D" instead of "3".

Just drove out to San Diego from Oklahoma doing about 75 to 80 mph. One stretch in AZ was up to 90-93 mph. Anyway, i average about 29 to 30 mpg. It really depends if you have to drive into the wind, that will drop the gas mileage.

The car now has about 95k miles and will change the plugs at the Gm dealership at 100k.

BTw, I changed the oil just before taking the trip and the oil change place put in about 7.5 qts. (i told them the car takes 6 qts). Anyway, the funny thing is that the car didn't burn any oil on the trip where it usually would need 1.5 to 2 quarts for a 3500 mile high-speed road trip. Very unusual.

Re: Poll: How long before changing spark plugs?

What I also find unusual is the guys with Intrigues in here that are getting this 30+mpg!!

My 2001 with 170,000 only gets 25mpg at an average speed of 50mph

So to the guys that get high mileage, have you regularly maintained your transmissions with new filters and fluid??? Also maybe your vehicles don't have a spoiler? (mine does, when I had it off for a day, I swear the car coasted WAY further...)

And PS, maybe the oil that the oil change place put in is a WAY different brand of oil. My intrigue will use a quart every 2500 miles with mobil ONE synthetic. BUT I changed brands and now it doesn't use ANY.
