Resetting The Change Oil Soon Light #73-83-16
Subject: Information - Resetting The "change Oil Soon" Light Or "oil Life" Display Models: 1997-98 Pontiac Grand Prix Standard Driver Information Center (dic) ======================================== The 1997-98 Grand Prix Features A "change Oil Soon" Light In The Driver Information Center (dic). This Light Will Come On, Based On Several Inputs, To Alert The Driver That The Oil Should Be Changed. If The Light Is Not Reset After An Oil Change, As Described On Page 2-79 Of The Owner's Manual, The Light Can Come On Later, Which May Confuse The Customer. The Reset Procedure Is: With The Ignition Key In The "on" Position, But The Engine Off, Fully Push And Release The Accelerator Pedal Slowly 3 Times Within 5 Seconds. If The "change Oil" Light Flashes, The System Is Resetting. Turn The Key Off, Then Start The Vehicle. If The "change Oil" Light Comes Back On, The Light Has Not Reset. Repeat The Procedure. It Is Necessary To Press The Pedal All The Way To The Floor. In Some Cases, It May Be Necessary To Manually Operate The Throttle Linkage Under The Hood To Get Enough Throttle Opening To Make The Light Reset. If The System Will Still Not Reset, Call Technical Assistance For A Procedure To Reset The Light Using The Tech 2. Optional Trip Computer ====================== If The Vehicle Is Equipped With The Optional Trip Computer, The "oil Life" Display Will Have To Be Reset After An Oil Change, As Described On Page 2-82 Of The Owner's Manual. The Reset Procedure Is: Press The Mode Button Until The Light Appears Lit Next To Oil Life. Press And Hold The Reset Button For Three Seconds. The Oil Percentage Should Change To 100%. Technicians Should Be Reminded To Reset These Features Whenever Performing An Oil Change. General Motors Bulletins Are Intended For Use By Professional Technicians, Not A "do-it-yourselfer". They Are Written To Inform Those Technicians Of Conditions That May Occur On Some Vehicles, Or To Provide Information That Could Assist In The Proper Service Of A Vehicle. If A Condition Is Described, Do Not Assume That The Bulletin Applies To Your Vehicle, Or That Your Vehicle Will Have That Condition. Re: Change Oil Soon Light
OK, John. As you know. I have two 1998 GP's. I go into the dic and turn if off. Always have. Never press gas ANYTIME. The first time it happened to me was when GM changed the oil. Asked them about it before I left. They walked out to my car, turned key on, took it to oil life and hit reset.
That is the only way I have ever did it. If you way works, great. But I will keep doing it my way. Now I feel better. Ship rims yet? How's the Wife? Work still busy (like I have to ask)?

Obviously (from previous posts) your GP's both have the trip computer. The standard cars do not! If you can find any pushbuttons other than trac off in my car I will be amazed! My car has only lights on the DIC, no buttons or menus marked oil life. CASS's post is correct and straight from my owners manual! We've been down this road before!

It's all good Jim. My last post showed directions for cars with the optional DIC like the ones you and I have.

Re: Change Oil Soon Light
Being honest, I went by what carnuttcass said and it worked perfect. Some cars do have buttons ad some do not; but the way my change oil light went off is by stepping on the accelerator three time. Thanx!!!!!!
