Creaking Noise

I have a 2000 Durango. Recently I've started hearing a creaking noise that may be coming from the rear leaf springs, but I'm not sure. Sounds like an old baby carriage when I push up and down on the rear bumper. Has anyone else had this problem with their Durango? If so what was the cure? Thanks..........Don

IT IS POSSIBLY YOUR SHOCKS. I HAVE A 99 AND I CHSNGED THE FACTORY SHOCKS TO SOME GABRIEL SHOCKS. (PIECES OF S#$@!!) AS SOON AS I PUT THE NEW ONES ON A HEARD A CREAKING SOUND FROM THE REAR. 3 WEEKS LATER I PUT THE FACTORY SHOCKS BACK ON AND NO NOISE.

Thanks for the info. I still have the factory shocks on mine. I'm pretty sure it's the leaf springs creaking. I'm going to take it in to the dealer. I'm still under extended warranty, so might as well let them figure it out.

Boss Man,

I did lube the rear springs once on my 99 Durango. It was easy to find by just moving the rear of the vehicle up and down. However, the most famous and hardest to find noise usually comes from the front sway bar bushings. ("Erk, Erk" when going over bumps) There are 2 front and 2 aft (both are in the front suspension). My Haynes manual shows a good picture of them. I got advised from an old thread that I cannot find to use motorcycle chain lube. I think it has bee's wax or something along those lines. I isolated the noise to the 2 aft bushings. Easily pulled them out (2 bolts per bushing mount) and sprayed the chain lube liberally to the bushings and their mounts. Haven't heard a peep in about 6 months. You can buy the sway bar bushings at parts stores if you want new, but I would still spray the chain lube on them as they all start erking eventually.

I did have the noise in the fromt bushings and they were replaced under warranty. I have an appointment with the dealer for the creaking noise in the back. I do believe it's coming from the springs, but I have an extended warranty, so I'll let them take care of it. I'll let you know what happens. Thanks again.............Don

Had an appointment at the dealer for the creaking noise which I believe is the rear springs. Of course, here in New York, we had 8 straight days of HARD rain which ended on the 16th, so the noise had stopped due to the constant water on the springs. No sense in bringing it in if the noise was gone, so I'll wait till it returns and bring it in then. I would say you could probably spray a lot of WD 40 and make the springs quiet down, but that would only be a temp fix.

Glad that you kept us updated! I'm in the big apple as well. I noticed that the squeaking stopped on mine as well due to the rain.

Well, here it is Nov 17th, and the noise from the rear springs has not returned. Guess I'll just have to be happy for now, and tackle the problem again, should the noise return.

Oh, it's still there. Now I'm wondering if it's from the front of the vehicle. I need to do some checking on it. I'll try the WD-40 route though.

If it's in the front, it's probably the front sway bar bushings referred to earlier in this post by me.

Don't waste your time with WD 40. It'll work for about a week. The motorcycle chain lube has been working for about 6 months or more. I had other types of lubes and so-called super lubes applied by Meineke & other shops. None of them last.

The noise is very difficult to isolate, but if it's an erk erk when going over small bumps, that probably it.
