what the hell was that?

So I hadn't driven the vr4 in 2 or 3 weeks, and I was dying for a reason to take it out. So I hear my cousin is coming down with his new girlfriend, so I figure stopping by and seeing them is a good enough reason. So Saturday around 1 in the afternoon my brother and I hop in the car and take off. Now the only car I've driven in the past few weeks is my girlfriends 4cylinder GrandAm, so I hadn't even bothered taking that over 65....so needless to say, I felt like going a little fast and finding someone to race.

So we're off, and halfway there we find a camaro. So I pull next to him, trying to entice him with a little cat and mouse, and letting my BOV off a few times, but he isn't biting. So I give up and cut across to the left to make the turn towards my aunts. Well apparently my antics got someone else's attention. I see this maroon hatchback cut over and whip in behind me to make the same turn...

So I'm looking in my rearview, seeing these 3 kids all smiles in their hatchback. I was looking for an emblem or something, but no luck...kinda looked like a Matrix, or one of those, it had a front bodykit bumper, but I just laugh to myself thinking nothing of it.

So I turn to my brother, nod backwards and say something like "I guess they wanna run" Well we get the turning arrow and I just take off, almost breaking the back wheels loose through the turn, I get aligned straight and just nail it, through first and a bit into 2nd and then let off. I look in my rearview, and the hatchback is pursuing, but a bit back there. So I slow down to 30mph and shift into 3rd, smiling to myself thinking they now know whats up...then I hear a PSSSSSHHHHHHUUUU... WTF???...that wasn't mine. I look in my rearview and they are right on my bumper with huge grins on their faces.

OK, so apparently I'm not the only one with boost in this race...so I double clutch, drop it into 2nd and the 2nd I do, they decide to switch into the oncoming traffic lane and pull up next to me. (Now this road starts to go up a mountain, so this all takes place on a 30 degree incline)
So I see them swing over trying to pass me and I just mash 2nd, and take off like a bat outta hell shooting uphill. As I top out 2nd and shift to third I glance in the mirror and see that they have since switched back into the right lane and are trying to keep up, but I have a lead.
I top third, adrenaline is pumping like crazy, because this isn't exactly the ideal place to race, as they tend to have speedtraps every so often. A quick check of hte mirror shows I have a few carlengths, I glance down and see 105-110. 4th(because if we are gonna get arrested, we are going to do it right So thankfully this hill is pretty straight, I take it up to 125ish, and brake. I've put another length or 2 in there.

So we slow down to take our turn. And they signal they want to follow. So I take the turn, wait for them to make it, they punch it, and so do I. Now we are going downhill, I top 2nd, but let off in 3rd. As our last turn is approaching quite fast. So I quickly debate whether to continue this or let them go, but I opt for taking the turn and letting them go, as the roads start getting more and more twisty, and I don't want anyone doing anything too stupid, so I throw on the signal, give them a wave and turn into the deadend.

Fast forward 24 hours: So today, we are heading back home, and I want another race. We're at a light and this white mustang flies by going the opposite direction...now ordinarily I wouldn't think much of it, but the guy had the most attention-getting paintjob humanly possible. Huge orange and green flames with purple outlines all over his white car...quite a bright contrast of colors. Unfortunantly, our light took FOREVER to change, so when I whipped the U-turn, and took off in pursuit, he was already long gone. But I'll find him another day.

Re: what the hell was that?

Nah, it wasn't a honda, it was one of those newer ones, possibly a Mazda Protege or something, it was bigger than a civic hatch. It was debadged and I don't know my hatchbacks all that well.

Re: what the hell was that?

huh? Matrix, MP3, Protege, Vibe? I dont think these cars were ones to be Turbocharged. Sounds like a decent sleeper. Yea... One time I was in the SS on I95, my exit coming up in about 1000 ft, and I got a red Z06 pacing me on the right. Unfortunatly, I had to take the exit because my mother was with me (lol). Yea yea... atealst I got to hear the LS6 at W0T for an instant.

Re: what the hell was that?

The mazdaspeed protege come sc'd from the factory...pretty low amount of boost from the factory, puts out about 170 hp...runs 15 flats or low 15s I think...BUT, it isn't a hatchback, so it wasn't the car that he was racing.

nice race, sounds like a lot of fun.

hate to say it but the guy in the camaro that didn't wanna race probably knew he would lose to a vr-4 so thats why he probably didn't wanna race. V8 drivers really don't like losing to anything less than another v8 nice race though.
