lighter/Fuse Box Layout

Hi, I have a 2000 malibu and my neither of the two cigaretty lighter/accessory power outlets are working. I wan't to know the fuse layout so I can see if I have to replace the fuse for that, but I don't have an owners manual. Can someone help me out.

Thanks.

Re: lighter/Fuse Box Layout

do you have your owners manual ? it is in there. On my 98 mal you have to open the door (driver), at the end of the dash facing out coverd by the closed door is a panel that opens and has the fuses, there should also be a little fuse puller AND a paper tag of the fuse lay out,,, wait a minute, this might be the location for the airbag service disconnect. ok it is either as above or right under the steering wheel, doesn't hurt to look. if it is not snap the cover back on and look under the steerinfg wheel.

Re: lighter/Fuse Box Layout

I found the fuse under the hood, There was one in the slot. It was a green fuse with a 30 on it. Would there be another reason why the cigar lighters would not work? All the other electrical things in my car work fine.

Re: lighter/Fuse Box Layout

how do you know the cigar lighter does not work ? do you know for sure that what you are plugging into the cigar lighter works ? what you are plugging in might have an open inline fuse, try it in another vehicle.
also try substituting / replacing the fuse under the hood withe same amp rating. It also could be the cigar lighter, my Malibu has 2 cigar lighters, if your does try in both.

Re: lighter/Fuse Box Layout

My malibu has 2 also. I am sure that the charger I am plugging in works because it works in our other 3 vehicles. The cigarette lighter itself never even heats up when you push it in. I can go check the fuse again, I think i may have checked the wrong one but I'm not sure. The fuse I checked was fine though.

Re: lighter/Fuse Box Layout

Nevermind, I did check the wrong fuse. I just went back and checked the right one and it was blown. Hopefully that is the last time I have to worry about it.

Re: lighter/Fuse Box Layout

OK, I replaced the fuse and tested the cigarette lighter. It worked. Problem solved, so I thought. I then tried to plug my phone charger in the accessory slot. Nothing happened. So then I tried the Cigarette lighter slot. Still Nothing. So, I tried to see if the cigarrette lighter would get hot and it didn't. I'm figuring I blew the fuse again. What can I do to fix this so it doesn't blow a fuse after one use?

Re: lighter/Fuse Box Layout

Most likely the plug on your phone charger is shorting out the outlet. It is pretty new or something old? Does it have springs on both sides to help center it or just on one side so that it goes in off-center?

Typically you would have more problems sticking something in the cigar lighter outlet because it has extra stuff in it to work with lighter element that might short out.

If you have any other type of charger you could try in vehicle - try it.

Re: lighter/Fuse Box Layout

I figured it all out and I've solved the problem. The actual cause of the blown fuse is the cigarette lighter itself. My phone charger works just fine and has worked just fine in the socket for months now. It's good that I don't smoke because as soon as I put in the cigarette lighter and push it in to heat it up, the fuse blows.

There may be something still wrong with it. I think I would check the resistance of the actuall "lighter" with a known good one or try a know good lighter in your car. Hopefully you are right and you found what was wrong, although what I am thinking is, the lighter probably draws up to almost the max of the fuse ( you may also want to check the fuse is actually the correct amps ) . On the other hand your cell phone charger only draws a few hundred milliamps to an amp or two.

Re: lighter/Fuse Box Layout

The plugs get a bunch of junk in them too that the charger might not be coming in contact with and the lighter is. Pull the fuse if you have a small wire brush clean out the socket then vacuum out the debris it may help.
