Exclamation 99GS won't run help!!!!!

Can someone help!!!
My Regal has been acting up for some time.
Now it finally died. Last night it died coming home from the mall. I couldn't get it started turns over but won't run. Left it at the mall overnight. Went to get car in morning and started right up but died a minute later. It will start intermitenly then die out.
If I let it sit for awhile it will start then run for a bit then start sputtering and black smoke then die out. If I do get it runing sometime it will run longer by appling gas but won't idle.
I recently changed plugs wires, fuel filter, Checked fuel pressure steddy at 50 psi, no engine light and no codes from obd II scanner.

Can someone please help,I'm dead in the water come monday with no car?

How many miles do you have on it? Fuel system sounds OK but check throttle body area. MAF sensor, IAC (Idle Controller), etc. On MAF just disconnect it. Other areas possible fuel injector or vaccum leak (intake manifold).

If you can keep it running for a while check the exhaust coming out the rear for flow because a clogged CAT convertor could do this. Good luck!

Car started this morning but lots of black smoke. I got it to idle after revinging up and clearing the smoke out . It idled for a couple of miutes then died. Won't start now.
What is the Maf sensor?
Where is it. Is it the black rectangle one in back of engine on top of
valve cover area?

When engine idles it seems to run graet then just dies out!

I may have to have a pro look at it.

You found the MAF sensor and the car is now running correctly? The $160 new and $80 reman is about right. Salvage yards have it for as low as $35.

You can run without the MAF connected for a short period of time. You may get a SES light but don't worry about it. With the MAF disconnected the ECU/PCM uses pre-programmed RPM maps instead of the input from the disconnected MAF. You may lose a few miles per gallon until it is replaced.

Let us know how it turned out. Good luck!

VJP64,

Continued from previous thread:

One last thing. With the MAF disconnected, the intial idle will be a little erratic until the engine warms up but it will idle correctly sooner or later.
Nothing to worry about for now but I'd see about getting a replacement MAF sensor soon.

MAF Sensor bad?

Engine runs without MAF sensor connected.
Soon as I connect it the engine dies out shortly after.
I will pick one up monday and swap it out.
I noticed the screws on that thing are different than usual. What type of bit do I need for this thing?

Does the engine need reprograming after in stalling a new MAF sensor?

Thats good news. The screws are Torx safety types. The tool is available at Autozone, Sears, etc. It's like an allen key but the tip inside is hollow.

No re-programming or resetting ECU/PCM required. Once hooked up take it for a good spin and it will re-learn over the next few drive cycles.

Good luck!

Smile MAF sensor

I just wanted to let everyone know that I replaced the MAF sensor and it fixed the problem.
It took about a week to get the part. I ordered it from a store on Ebay for $99.00
Compared to the 230.00 from autozone or NAPA.
Man those little sensors are exspensive.

Thanks.
