On some engines if the the timing belt breaks the valves and pistons will hit each other and cause major damage.

So, which engine will cause piston/valve damage.

If you have the 3.2L, it is an interference engine.

Re: Re: do i have a interfarence engine {95.5 3.2 passport}

An interference engine has that problem because the valves can interfere with piston travel if the timing belt breaks. My problem! I'm hoping there is no damage.

There is alot of literature out there claiming that the 3.2L is an interference engine, but its not true. There are many people on this board with first hand knowledge that it is non-interference. So, no worries!

Re: do i have a interfarence engine {95.5 3.2 passport}

Isuzu does state that the 3.2L engine is an interference engine however I have been inside hundreds of these things I have even gone as far as pulling the t-belt off of my own 3.2L and spinning it over with the starter no damage incurred
I have never heard of one of these having a problem with pistons hitting valves
oh and by the way the heads on my Trooper have been machined twice which means the valves are closer to the pistons than yours are

Interesting.

Why have the heads on your Trooper been machined?

Were they warped?

Just wondering...

I beg to differ with you my friend, I have a factory service manual and also an Isuzu Factory Engine tech training manual for the 98+ 3.2 V6. Here is a piece from the book. "The angle of the exhaust seat has also been changed;relocated in the direction of the intake valve,this feature helps increase the clearance in-between the intake and exhaust valves.This feature enables the engine to "Free Wheel" in the event of a timing belt failure. So that is fact that the 98 and on 3.2 L V6 (6VD1-W) is definately non-interference.

Now I am a bit confused - Is my 1995 3.2 built Oct 94 interference or not?
