Re: Ferrari 250 GTO Le Mans 1962 N.A.R.T. (chassis #3387)

Ferrari 250GTO interior colours
Jess Pourret in his Ferrari 250 GT competition cars states that the interiors were completely devoid of upholstry except cloth covers to the seats. There was no headlining and only later was there a an aluminium cover over the dash which was painted matt black. This was painted matt crackle black The rest of the interior panals were painted mettalic gold. However this was as they left Scaglietti. Period photos I have suggest several cars had black floors and transmission tunnels. A picture of the SEFAC entered No20 at Lemans 1963 clearly shows the Gold rear bulkhead. On my model I have decided for want of limited pictures to go with Black Floor but the rest Gold. They definitely did not have upholstry. That only came later when they started to be restored.

Thank you for your information. I checked my reference pictures and as far as I can get a clue about the interior it seems to be black. Therefore I decided to stick to this (non)color.

Regarding the custom mixed paint I contacted www.autolack21.de and asked whether they could mix the paint and deliver it in a spraycan. Including shipping within Germany the spraycan cost me about € 26. If anybody needs help contacting them (language-wise) I´ll be glad to help.

I layed 2 mist and 2 wet coats of TS-13 over the paint. Afterwards I sanded the whole body using 2000 grid Tamiya sanding paper and various sanding sticks. Afterwards I finished the body using the Tamiya portfolio of rubbing compounds.

The blue got a little more depth and it seems as it lost some of its silverish teint.

The next step will be the application of the decals and covering them with a semi-gloss coat to protect them.
I´m not sure yet whether to use the window parts of the detail set or to stick with the usual Bare Metal Foil. Any thoughts on that?

Cheers

Robert

Robert, here is a link to Ferrari chassis #3387 when it was sold by Michael Sheehan exotic car broker.

http://ferraris-online.com/pages/car...FE-250GTO-3387

Take a look at the two pictures of the interior, specifically the dash area. I think that is actually very close to how it raced at Le Mans.

Best regards,

Larry

Thank you for your information. I had a look at these pictures before and I decided to use them as reference for the interior of this build. One thought I have is to add the dashboard-cover that is missing on these pictures.

Nevertheless the part is prepared and the PE already added so I think I will go with whatever looks right to me on the day of the final assembly.

Cheers

Re: Ferrari 250 GTO Le Mans 1962 N.A.R.T. (chassis #3387)

The body has been decaled, which were sealed using semi-gloss Mr. Gunze Top Coat. It is now ready for BMF-ing and adding the exterior details from the Hobby Design kit.

If you look closely the decal on the right side of the car got damaged but I could fix it pretty well. Now it looks like the roundel has been painted onto the car as several reference pictures show.

Cheers

Re: Ferrari 250 GTO Le Mans 1962 N.A.R.T. (chassis #3387)

I have an update on the Le Mans 250 GTO. After I finished the paint job I started to apply the various details on the body.

All chrome window trims have been BMF´ed. First I thought about using the window frames supplied in the Hobby Design PE set. But these don´t fit well sizewise. The rear frame is a little too large - larger as the plastic window frame molded into the body. So just to be on the safe side I went with good old BMF.

I installed the back lights. Another problem with the PE set occured. The metal inlays underneath the lights are too large as well. If you apply all of them the three lights will not fit. With the metal inlays the would use more room than there is on the back side. Therefore I only used the round inlays and left the last one as provided out of box.
The licence plate lights need to be re-adjusted. I´ll go for that later on.

(There is a lot of dust on the model - yet!)

I also started on the front. The PE grill and the fog lights have been installed. The I wanted to apply the PE covers of the front light covers. I was stunned when I found out that the pins Hobby Design provided to fiddle into the metal covers are too thick for the holes provided. I need to see what I will do about that. The side indicators have been installed as well as the Ferrari badge using an E-Jan-Sticker.

The last pictures show a quick mock-up with the chassis.

Comments and criticism are welcome.

Happy modeling.

Robert

Really nice progress!

It has to be very annoying when aftermarket parts don't fit. I don't use them often but encounter the same problem with decals over and over again. I wonder if these guys ever test build their stuff before they sell it....

Looks very good. I like the paint alot. I am suprised you did not try to install the Hobby Designs window frames. They are a pain but look superb when done. My Dino 246 has the Hobby Design window frames installed. They make a very sharp line, much better than bare metal foil and allow the use of super clear sheet plastic.

Re: Ferrari 250 GTO Le Mans 1962 N.A.R.T. (chassis #3387)

Thank you everybody for your comments.

Besides the major fitment issues I really enjoy adding the PE (f.ex. on the steering wheel, the grilles and the badges) because it makes the model look more realistic as well as more sophisticated.

I think that the manufacturers test fit the PE. But it happened to me in the past that some parts fit magically and others seem to be created for another kit or body. I´m sure that I never used all of the PE for a kit just becuase of fitment issues.

What really bothers me most is that the pins Hobby Design put into the PE-Set don´t fit the parts and the herein provided drill-holes they actually ask you put them in.

I tried applying the window frames - believe me. They are too large (as stated before). That means that if I´d fill the molded into plastic window frames of the kits body (now covered with BMF) the PE window frames would leave about a milimeter spare plastic to the edges of the actual window glas. Even if I´d cover this in rubber black it would look way out of scale. Therefore I went with my good old BMF, which is okay with me.

Where do you get your supply of super clear sheet plastic. Do you just buy it in a hobby shop or do you have a special supplier (maybe on the internet)?.

Cheers
