I have a 2000 Honda Accord and an "engine check" light came on; the code reads P1457, which is, according to its description, "EVAP Emission Control System Leak Detected (Control Canister System)". I called the dealer asking how much would it be to change a catalytic converter (I thought, maybe, that's a problem), anyway, it's like 1,300 + tax! So, before rushing into anything, would anybody have an explanation or any other ideas why I have this problem? Appreciate it.

Re: Engine check light on (code P1457)
The p1457 is an EVAP code correct. It is related to the tank side of the system versus a p1456 wich would usually be the gas cap.
Usually the Canister vent shut solenoid which is located on the EVAP charcol canister usually stops working so either a leak is detected by the PCM or the system can't vent. Either way the easiest way to check this is with a Honda scan tool to see if it is operating. The other way is to just give the solenoid power and ground and see if it clicks. If it doesn't than thats the problem. I also recomend replacing the Bypass solenoid because they are know to take out the PCM when they go bad. So while the CVS is being replaced you might as weel do the Bypass since its right next to it. Spend a little now or a lot later. Any way i would say its probably a 99% chance thats your problem. |

Thank you so much for your answer. I'll try that. One more question: you're saying that "give the solenoid power and ground and see if it clicks"...... maybe it's a dumn question, but...... how exactly do I give a solenoid more power and ground? Thanks again.

You have to unplug the brown two pin connector than with a jumper wire or spare battery you need to connect power to one terminal on the CVS and ground to the other.
There is two wires on the brown connector. A Black with yellow wnich has power all the time with the key on and a Green with white stripe which is the actuall ground that the PCM provides. |
