Revell Dodge Challenger SRT8 & AMT Challenger R/T

Built these back in May for what turns out to be an 8-page build comparision/expanded review spread in the October issue of Scale Auto. I had the SRT8 in hand about a month and a half before it was offered to the public.

The basic kits are quite different, the AMT is a fairly simple curbside, the Revell is full-detail. The AMT suffers from lack of markings for the black glass surrounds, no interior rear view mirror, and the rear axle is slightly too far forward. The front lip spoiler is good, but they made the interface w/the front fender opening far too large, if I didn't have to build it OOB I'd have filled it. Most people building the AMT are not paying attention to this and leaving the whole part black.

The Revell is full detail, but suffers from the toylike tires, non-steerable wheels, and a fascia molded in mostly 1 piece making for a lot of tedious masking. It goes together beautifully, and sits well straight from the box. Both kits are fun builds and they look good together. If you want an SRT8, get the Revell kit. One could make a full-detail R/T by kitbashing the AMT kit w/the Revell SRT8 and an engine from an AMT Chrysler 300 or Testors Charger R/T.

Great, can you show a photo from the Revell engine?

Here's an underhood shot; it needs more black paint (reference shots I had at the time didn't show that big area behind the headlights).

Holy moly... that is indeed a nice couple. I'd get the Revell because of it not being curbside. Wheels will be changed anyways for 21'' Foose

Clean built as expected from you.

Re: Revell Dodge Challenger SRT8 & AMT Challenger R/T

Very nice work! I especially like the blue. It's good to have two different manufacturers models to build and display side by side. I built the MPC Nova a long time ago and now have the new Revell one. Everything I thought looked odd on the MPC kit 20 years ago looks correct on the Revell one.

I noticed the rear glass and headlights on the AMT, they just scream TOY!

And my final verdict on the 1:1 scale Challenger, thumbs down. It looks too fat and lethargic, just like it's 300 parent. The old '70's Challengers had a sharp lean look. The new Camaro is much nicer of a redo.

Keep up the great work!

Great job on both Challengers, the Revell one sounds the best bet. Where can you get them in UK?

Well...the first copies have been sent out, I got my author's copy over the weekend. So they'll be on the shelves and in the subscriber's hands very soon.

Re: Revell Dodge Challenger SRT8 & AMT Challenger R/T

Those are great builds! It's great to see them side by side. It's so interesting to see how model kit manufacturers each differ in how they massage dimensions to achieve "the look." Great side-by-side. Thanks!
