Converting the BMW M1 Protour into a Ferrari Daytona 365 GTB/4 LeMans

Perhaps “Trading Places” or "The 'I don't want this kit, you don't want that kit' build" would be a better name for this transatlantic, globalised joint build but we wanted to get your attention and it is April Fool's day after all

The idea is simple. CeeElle had a Revell BMW Procar kit with the Renaissance Carte de France transkit he didn't want (the fool!) and I had an Italeri Ferrari Daytona kit that I didn't want (who can I unload this on?) I took his BMW. He took my Ferrari. Everyone was happy.

(sorry for the bad quality of this image but it is my first attempt at an animated gif)

But then we started thinking, and you know what happens when two modelers do that. We thought it would be fun to explore in one thread what each of us saw in a kit the other had lost all interest in. A joint build was born! (despite the Polish post office's best efforts to scuttle this idea before it even began).

And so CeeElle is going to build an Italian kit of an Italian car that went to America by way of Poland. And I am going to build a German kit (with French transkit) of a German car that came to Poland by way of America.

Woo. My head hurts!!

I have to say I am interested to see what CeeElle will do with my kit and I am hoping that I don't destroy those neat looking CdF decals from Renaissance.

We haven't set time limits or parameters of any kind and this certainly isn't a competition – just some fun. We'll progress in a haphazard and uncoordinated way and hopefully finish sometime this decade CeeElle says he's going to finish the Daytona because it's his main entry in the 60th Anniversary Group Build, but we'll see...

Thanks for looking in and enjoy

CeeElle and Stevenski

Re: Converting the BMW M1 Protour into a Ferrari Daytona 365 GTB/4 LeMans

This is the car I am planning on building.

Ever since I saw the decal set on Renaissance's web site a long time ago, I had wanted to try my hand at it. It was an amazing coincidence that CeeElle and I both posted in the classified section at the same time and we even had the same thought that maybe we could trade!

In addition to the Renaissance decal kit I have also loaded up on their p/e set and the Scaleproductions transkit. There is some duplication (and differences) between the 2 sets but between them I can chose the parts i like best.

First impressions of the Revell kit are so-so. Looks like I will have quite a lot of cleaning and puttying to do first – something I don't have much experience with.

My biggest problems?
a) No reference materials!!!! I have found 2(!!) pictures of this car on the web.
b) Paint. What color was used for the light blue?
If anyone can help with these questions I will be really grateful.

I would also like to thank Godfather23 for being very helpful in aswering questions about his great entry in the MS competition.

You're up CeeElle

Nice to see this one built as i have one myself not built. I did notice the wheels are horrible, and its a good thing you got the transkit and pe wheels. Ill keep my eye on this one.

Re: Converting the BMW M1 Protour into a Ferrari Daytona 365 GTB/4 LeMans

good lord... day one and i'm already behind.

this will be my first W.I.P. on the board. i'll be building charles pozzi's 1972 le mans winner, chassis number 15667, mostly because i love the livery:

charles pozzi was a french grand prix and endurance driver who made five appearances at le mans. following his retirement, he founded Charles Pozzi S.A., the sole importer of ferraris and maseratis in france. he also owned the race team that bore his name.

he purchased 365 daytona SN 15667 directly from ferrari in 1972. it first raced at le mans that year, taking first in the GT class and fifth overall. it finished first at the tour de france and fourth in the GT glass (10th overall) at the Paris 1000 KM. the car ran at le mans the following year, placing second in the GT5.0 class and ninth overall.

i'll be using the Italeri 365 daytona competition coupe for the build and some minor scratch building (roll cage, airbox, etc.).

i'll be using Studio27 decals for the livery and a Studio27 photoetch set. although the set is made for the Fujimi kit, i think most of what i need will work with the Italeri kit. I know Acu-Stion made a set for the Italieri / Revel repack kit, but i couldn't find it anywhere.

i wasn't kidding about being behind already. i was trying to wrap up another project before launching this one (mostly because it was gonna be the project where i learned how to use an airbrush ). i still haven't finished that project, but i ought to so i can work on my airbrushing skills before tackling this paint job.

i've still gotta sort through my reference photos. i've got some great exterior photos of all angles of the Pozzi car I'm building, but just one engine and one interior shot. if anyone's got more, i'd love to have them! otherwise i'lll rely on photos of other competition daytonas.

i'm looking forward to the build, and to finally contributing something beyond the occasional "nice build" comment (or warning against non-existent eBay scams ). i just hope steveski doesn't embarass me too much... this is just my sixth build!

LOL I thought it was a joke! I'm tuned!
For my experience both kit (esci M1 and italeri pony) aren't at actual clean+perfect fitting industrial standard but I want to see in your hands. Also fun see much more value in aftermarket than in the cr##py kits sometimes .

That livery looks very nice - excellent choice! I think it will look great in 1/24

Ah, you are getting started. Your introduction to the kit is marvelous and gives it the attention it really needs. I really want to see what you make out of it though I know I might need to get mine out of the shelf again and add the things you will put out of your sleeves to make it a klutz100-model. Show me what to do -with your permission - I might copy.

Re: Converting the BMW M1 Protour into a Ferrari Daytona 365 GTB/4 LeMans

great idea for a thread guys - anyone wanna swap my 1/24 scale New Beetle Kit for a 1/12 Yardley Mclaren (seems like a fair trade to me )

anyway, seriously - CeeElle - if I was doing that scheme I would get the white down first, then use Tamiya Masking tape flatten it down really well and then light coats of the red and blue - take your time - be as neat as you can with the masking tape and it should turn out ok, dunno if anyone else has any better suggestions!
