Auto vs. Stick
How does the automatic go up against the stick? How better is the manual? I need a quick answer with some information to back it up? How many run autos? The reason I ask I am buying a new one and most of the good ones are auto, all the raced out ones that have been used up the .... are manual/ I just want a somewhat fast car that can still hang with the hondas and take them for a ride...Does the auto limit the upgrades and if it does to what point? Forgot to mention I am looking at the gsx trim.. turbo all the way baby.
thanks all you guys, eclipses rock specially gsx |

"I just want a somewhat fast car that can still hang with the hondas..."
If you buy a turbo dsm, you won't be worrying about hanging with hondas, my boy! Anyways, I'd go with manual if you can. With automatic, there's more transmission work you have to do in order to get more power to the ground - torque converter, etc.

I would definitely try to get a manual, i had a 96 integra with an auto and i regretted it big time. It was a nice car and i put a couple mods on it and stuff but it just wasnt as fun as stick.

an auto won't limit your upgrades, in fact, you will be looking into a slightly different direction of upgrades. like guitar said. don't be confused by what people may tell you. an auto can just be as fast, if not faster than a M/T if you build the transmission right. generally a stock auto is less powerful, less torque than a manual. so the biggest part you should worry about racing an stock auto tranny is the launching part (altho, there are ways to close that gap such as powerbraking). however with a full tranny rebuilld (shift kit, tranny cooler, torque converter... etc) can get you up to 10s if not 11s. many out there are running 10s autos. i have an auto. it's certainly not as much fun to play with than a M/T since i don't get to shift it. but i am saving up for a big tranny rebuild.

Depends on personal preference.. auto's are nice and can be very fast... but I for me I'd rather have a slowmobile manual than a fast auto..

Re: Auto vs. Stick
jon sheppard has a 8.76 second 1/4 mile automatic Talon. it will be a different upgrade path but the end result will probably be more consistent times. its one less thing to try and adjust when youre trying for 1/4 mile times

Re: Auto vs. Stick
less things to have to upgrade on a stick... like nothing but a clutch...
go with stick if at all possible. on a GSX you are going to have your hands full once you start making some decent power on it changing out the diff's and such. no need to worry about TC's and coolers and such.... ![]() no offense to you AT guy's :0:0 |

Re: Auto vs. Stick
do get a manual if you can fine one with good condition.... just because it's so much more fun to drive it.

Re: Auto vs. Stick
If your looking at a used 1g the auto has a smaller turbo, smaller injectors among other things making it a lot slower stock than the 5 sp.

Re: Auto vs. Stick
Shep doesn't use an auto. Both transmissisons are plenty capable for almost all people, so get whichever you WANT, not which is marginally better.

Re: Auto vs. Stick
If you do get an auto all you need to do is get a 2500-3000 stall converter and you will have the lauch like a manual car.

Re: Auto vs. Stick
a quality Torque converter from IPT runs about $400. if you get a custom built one (which is recommanded) from them, it'll run you just bout a grand.

Stick is more fun and cheaper to upgrade...and boostedspyder a clutch change will do with some small mods but when u start runnin some big power through a manual the differential will explode, and turbo dsm's dont t ake much to make tons of power...
