Vendor Warning: SS Auto Chrome

As my recent posts yield, I've been in the market for a turbo lately. I found a really good deal at www.ssautochrome.com or so I thought. I have been fighting with them ever since ordering and I feel like it's going to continue for a while.

I'll tell you my story. I ordered a turbo kit from them and I wanted it delivered to my FL address and not my billing address in MA. I received tracking information from FedEx that it was being shipped to MA. I contacted SS Auto Chrome to have them fix the situation. I received an e-mail back telling me that I had to call FedEx and have them reroute it. I thought this was odd but I did what they said. Direct quote from FedEx when I explained the situation "They must not do much business with us because it is their responsiblity to change the address." They then told me to contact them again.

I did and SS Auto Chrome got back to me a day later (the entire previous paragraph happened in about 20 minutes). They responded saying that credit card policy prohibits them from shipping to an address different from my billing address. They said I had two options: 1) refuse the package. 2) get it in MA. I have come across instances where the shipping and billing addresses have to be the same and I can understand why, but they never made mention of it anywhere on their site, then shipped it to the billing address without notifying me.

I replied saying that they should make this policy more clear when ordering and I told them that I had to refuse the shipment.

Rather than contacting FedEx and stopping the shipment, they let it be unsuccessfully shipped and it was sleighted for an attempt the next day. I contacted FedEx and told them that I wanted to refuse the package, since the company obviously wasn't going to do anything.

I received an e-mail today telling me to call FedEx and have them redirect the package to the correct address and bill the company. At this point, I've already ordered from SlowBoyRacing so I replied that I had already called FedEx and refused the package and that I wanted my money back when they received the return. I just received a very nasty e-mail from them saying that I needed to drop the "high and mighty" attitude and that they have their policies and I should "deal with it."

That's my story. After all this, I did a little research on the company. I found out that they used to be called XS Power. They changed their name because there was a lot of bad press about the parts XS Power was dealing. A few stories I've come across and read involved turbos splitting down the middle after the first start, turbos not lasting more than 1000 miles and turbos held together by epoxy. I can't confirm the veracity of any of these but I know there is bad press out there and I have had a terrible experience.

Sorry this is long but I feel it is important to get out there. Don't be lured by their ported EVO 16G with 2G install kit for $550!

Heres an article on the turbo they are selling:

My advice: stay away from eBay turbos.

So they are pissed because they have terrible customer service. That makes sense. I hope they actually refund your money.

Re: Vendor Warning: SS Auto Chrome

I bought a turbo manifold from them for my SR20DET back in the day. I was lucky, they seem to have a problem with the flanges being perfectly straight and having fitmet problems.

I was lucky and it fit fine... although their 'polished' finish came off in a weeks time of driving. And turned into a nice ugly black.

A buddy of mine had a SS Auto chrome turbo manifold on his SR20DET and had fitment issues... sooo my guess is to stay clear.
