Camero TPI Acceleration from stop
I have installed a 1989 305 TPI on a small block in my 58 Chev Pick Up(TH 350 Trans). Everything works great except that it dies when accelerating from a stop when hot and closed loop. I have replaced the tpi, reset its voltage at closed throtle from .45-.60 V, looked for vacuum leaks and checked the ignition(most of which is new). I behaves like a carb would that has no accelerator pump when hot. Any ideas.

Re: Camero TPI Acceleration from stop
do you have all the computer controls and sensors hooked up?? and do you have some sort of check engine light wired up to the ECM?
If you have a check engine light, and the DLC, you can flash the computer for error codes using a paper clip. If you have everything hooked up i can tell you how to do it.

Re: Camero TPI Acceleration from stop
The DLC is the Diagnostic Link Connector, its the black plug under your dash below the steering column. I believe if i remember correctly we have a 16 pin connector, so if you numbered from left to right across the top row of ports, you would wire ports 7 and 8 together. If we have a 12 pin connector, it would be ports 5 and 6.
Unfold a paperclip into a U shape with the ends close together. Then put one end in the two ports on the top row, farthest to the right. the check engine light should turn on and start flashing. the first code it will flash is a code twelve, it will look like this.... Flash - pause - flash flash - pause - pause - flash - pause - flash flash - pause - pause - flash - pause - flash flash - pause - pause - ignore this as its normal. a code twelve is set anytime the key is on and the engine is not running. at this point start counting the flashes, if it flashes another code 12, there are no other codes stored. say for instance you have a code 42, the next flashes you see would look like.... flash - flash - flash - flash - pause - flash - flash -pause - pause - (repeating two more times) dont worry if you miss something, because each code is flashed three times giving you the chance to get it right. Once you do this, come back and post what codes you found, and we can probly help you much better. when you get your number values from flashing the codes, for instance, a 13, 32, 43, 44. you can post them here or look them up online. or like i did buy a manual on the car and it should have a table to decode them. in this case it would be... Code 13 - Oxygen Sensor failure Code 32 - EGR Failure Code 43 - Knock sensor (aka misfire) Code 44 - Lean exhaust

Re: Camero TPI Acceleration from stop
Sorry to cut you off '89, but...You have my utmost respect, however I'd like to clarify the 12 pin connector before some one with an OBD II goes running out jamming paper clips in their connector.
Be sure you have a rectangular connector, pre 1994. If you have a connector that has slanted sides this won't work. Even tho most GMs didn't go OBD II until 96, the 94 - 96 won't give flash readings. And jumping the parrallel; ports on these will cause funky things to occur with the BCM. |
