Several Important Questions.....

Anyone take a look at Sport Compact Car mag. The 500+ hp gsx only got a 12 sec. 1/4 mile. This guy built such an amazing car, but cant drive.

So...if thats not it, I hear a lot that you go faster in certain areas above a certain sea level? Can someone explain this to me...

Also, the other guy....with the 94 gsx, blew his turbo...Now hear is where i get nervous bout my car. How does this guy get into Sport Compact mag's Ultimate Street Car Challenge, n blow his friggin turbo. If anyone, Kevin shoulda been in there (sayin that kevin does over 100 passes a year, n drives daily). What did this guy do wrong?

More questions....

Im thinking bout saving some cash in the begining. So Im just gonna buy some sticky tires using stock wheels. What should i get, i want something real nice n sticky, lol. Toyo? Lots of guys have it, dont hear much good bout it though. BFG? Hear thats good, anything better?

What wheels are nice lookin, at least 17's that are equal or less than 14 lbs. Centerline has bout 14, but i dont like em, n id like ta go lower. Anything else....

Kevin, you said $1800 took you to the 12's. What mods where those? On your site, i dont understand what mods you have, there just like the name of the company or whatever...You got a wastegate? Headers? FIC 850s? Are those ur injectors? Walbro 255, is that a fuel pump (lol, im lost)? I wanna know this becuase im taking a look at this other 11 sec. setup n comparing it to yours. Both are very different....

Also kevin, Whats DSMlink? Fuel controller? If so, I was thinking bout getting the apexi afc (its in the other 11 sec. setup), whats the diff, which is better?

i know the answer to the other questions but ill let him explain it too you cause its his car! for DSMlink... its not just a fuel controller, its a datalogger! DSMlink is so much better for so many reasons! the S-AFC its just a airflow fuel controller, although DSMlink is better the S-AFC is cheaper and will work just fine if you dont want to spend the money on DSMlink. although i would suggest getting DSMlink because its a great tool for tuning and just fun to mess with!

also on racingknowledge.com there is a very helpful thread thanks to kevin(95GSXRacer) and the other DSMers over at that site for tuning so i figured everyone usually has a question on tuning or S-AFC, DSMlink, or some other air/fuel controller/datalogger... well here is the site and thanks again kevin for your knowledge!

Re: Several Important Questions.....

I'm back! And its good to see some old posts coming back up, glad the info is still being used.

You'd be surprised how common this is... By looking at his mph, if they give it, we can see what it "should" have run. Post it up if you have it.

The higher above sea level you get, the less dense the air is. And we know that more dense is more power, from the cold air intake concept, car pulling like a raped aped on cold days, etc. You can see the effect of this if you look at a datalog of a run done at high altitude, the airflow is lower than you would expect it to be. Becuase of the lower density. Those guys have to work harder to run the same times poeple at low elevation might run, and turbo efficiency will suffer (thats a whole other topic, but I can explain why if anyone is interested).

There are any number of reasons for a turbo to "blow." May or may not have been his fault or even preventable. Thats racing I think the USC covers not nly drag racing, but autox and other stuff. I dont think my car is competitive enough. But I will admit I often wonder why they choose some of teh cars they do...

I cant answer this question, since i run street tires. I launch as quickly, or faster, than the guys on radials and slicks. When the weather gets cooler (beginning and end of the season) I actually have the advantage. Those race tires suck royally when cold, and its pretty hard to heat them on an AWD car. If its FWD, then disregard all this, and i'm sure someone with some experience with individual tires can comment.

A 17" wheel at 14 pounds is going to be a bit rare, and certainly not cheap. Hell, I'm happy with my 17s weighing 17 pounds (the 1:1 rule). Rotas are cheap and light, other than that, I dont know much about wheels.

I guess in an effort to keep the mod list from become a long winded bragging rights pissign match, I took for granted that it was all common knowledge, when that may not be the case. PErhaps I'll go back through and edit it. But I can say that I think everything I had in that 1800 bucks is no longer on the car heh. Lets see...

Exhaust (bushur 2.5" turbo back)
K&N filter (FIPK kit)
1g BOV on a cheap UICP
Profec B (could save some cash here with a MBC)
www.pocketlogger.com logger
Palm Pilot M100
100 dollar 14b with 120k miles, with RRE "hacker/tweaker" kit
AFC

I get 2100 when I add up what I paid for that stuff. Perhaps I assumed that 95% of poeple will get the MBC and used that figure. 50 for a MBC comes out to 1800, even with the palm pilot, etc. I ran 12.74 at 109 if i remember correctly. Stock IC, injectors, etc, on race gas (110-116 octane) at 22-24 psi. I think thats all the relevant info. I had other non power producing mods as well, like the stronger center diff, suspension, etc.

Like RST said, its a fuel controller, logger, and TMO type chip all in one, with tons more functionality. Check out www.DSMlink.com. You also get a membership to what i consider one of the better forums out there for tuning, the DSMlink forums. It replaces the logger, palm pilot (can run on palm, but laptop is better), and AFC in the list above. Hmm, I think I Was forgetting the TMO chip in that list. Can get keydiver chips for ~75 bucks now, so make it 1875 Replaces that too. So it pays for itself, especially if your car is a 95 and you already have the correct ECU to run it. Hope that makes some sense...

Re: Several Important Questions.....

i'm pretty sure that is frowned upon at most tracks and you can get banned for life if you get caught, at least that is how it is around here. but what they don't see won't jurt them, and street races are a whole other issue, but i don't take Kevin to be the underground street racing demon king type anyways. i don't think he could stand to see all those ricers crying...

Re: Several Important Questions.....

I've never raced for money. Not so say that I havent had my share of ricers want to. I tell them I wont race for less than 500 and that scares most of them away. I dont get the TV ricers that would put up "2 LARGE" on every race... Oh well. And believe i have been tempted to try to pay for a few mods this way... A high 12/low 11 second pump gas car should be able to terrorize its share of street races, but its just too risky. I've worked hard to get my drivign record back under control

I've beat plenty of porches, vipers, vettes, NSXs, and other fast production cars, but all at the track. I'm sure we could race for money at the track, theres really no one around to see. The techs are all too busy to care.
