It all depends on where you live (Europe, North America, or Down Under), what your budget is, and what qualities you're looking for. I'm going to assume that you live in North America. Unfortunately we didn't get the Cosworth, which was indeed a very fast rally car clone. If your budget is quite high, and you're looking for speed and style, the ZX2 S/R would be your best bet. They are very rare and hard to find, but they came from the factory with special wheels and trim, Borla exhaust, and lower Eibach springs. Next after that would be a regular ZX2, then a 91-96 Escort GT.

Whatever you do, DO NOT BUY A 1988 ESCORT GT. I had one of those, and I replaced just about every replaceable part on it, including the engine. And I still had to have it towed away.

I'd like to get my hands on a 84 or 85 Escort GT Turbo, but I've NEVER seen one for sale. 120 hp and like 1800 lbs or something. I believe they had EXP turbos as well, which would also be pretty cool.

Most of the good ones are hard to find. Don't know much about the American escorts but over here we have the Cosworth, RS Turbo and GTI amoungst others. The GTI is quite basic and you will get about 130 BHP from a 130 injector model. The RS TURBO series 1 is about 135 BHP standard and the series 2 a bit less about 130. The good thing about escorts is you can upgrade them without too much trouble. Some cosworths over here are pushing 400 BHP.

If you dont get a Cosworth, dont get an Escort at all.

btw, i know a guy who has a 600hp Cosworth, it is a race car but is also street legal once the slicks are taken off.

The REALLY old school ones are the best!

I dont know much about them, but I dont think we ever got them in the US and i think they were late 60's early 70's. They were about the size of a Datsun 510.

I saw one at the historic auto races at portland international raceway and fell in love, awesome cars. And the one that was racing RIPPED!!

You mean like this one?

That's a MK1 Escort...they're rear wheel drive and were unfortunately never offered in the US, although some have been imported, mostly for racing
