1991 Celica GT - Electrical Help Needed.
I have a 91 Celica GT - 238,000 miles.
I have a problem in that the horn, cigarette lighter, and return function for the turn signal do not work at this time. all fuses are good and not broken at this time. Any suggestions ? |

Re: 1991 Celica GT - Electrical Help Needed.
Did they all go out at the same time?
The lighter is on a separate circuit than the horn, so I doubt there's any coincidence there. The turn signal return is usually a mechanical, so something might have broken off the signal return inside the steering column that is jamming the horn. But you can apply 12v to the horn to check it for operation. As for the lighter, are you getting power to the socket or does the lighter itself not pop out after you press it in to heat it? You need to check for power there too...the lighters themselves do fail. I've also had instances where I was using a power adapter and it was getting hot enough that the adapter melted a little, causing the spring-loaded tip to stop working and make contact inside the socket. Finally, check that you have a good ground from the socket to the body. A $30 multimeter is indispensible for chasing down electrical gremlins. Hope this helps!

Re: 1991 Celica GT - Electrical Help Needed.
Well I have additional issues as well now, the car will not start, so i yanked the alternator and had it tested, and was told it needed to be replaced. I replaced the alternator but it still wont start.
I also notice that if it tap the brake lights, turn things off and on, there is a load problem as it seems diffucult to draw power and a couple of times has shut off temporairily. |

Update 1991 Celica GT - Electrical Help Needed.
Starting issues long since resolved. - Nut for electrical wire on alternator was loose. Tightened and jump started, also used thread locker to prevent again.
Hazard lights still dont work, can use both turn signal lights no problem. Hazard light switch is located on the center dash. I got the horns to work from the relay to the each of the horns. I had to re splice the wire between horn 1 and horn 2. However, I can only draw 6 volts from the battery up to the horn switch back down to the relay. Does anyone have an understanding as how power is reduced rather than completely lost ? 245,000 miles plus at this point. |
