99 cougar window

I own an 99 cougar that has the driver's window down and will not go up. I have checked the switch and it seems to be good. I swapped the switch with the passenger side window switch, with no results. The motor makes a click and a hum sound when pressing the down position, but nothing when pressing the up position. Is it possible that the motor has gone bad?

malfunctioning driver window

it is possible the motor went out, or maybe jumped track (out of alignment).

Re: 99 cougar window

I have a 2000 cougar that wasn't rolling up either, and after I replaced the relay it worked.

Question Re: 99 cougar window

I have a 2000. First the passenger window would not go down but will go up. Then the drivers window won't go down. I suspect switch or relay. Can anyone give me any info on removing switches or where the relay is located?

Re: 99 cougar window

The relay is located in the door so you will have to unscrew the door panel then pry back the insulation. After that the relay is screwed onto the door frame by two screws, the relay sould be white. The actual relay from ford is $35, but i spent $10 at Napa Auto for a similar GM one. I took the actual relay part out of the case and replaced it w/ the one that fit the female end and placed the case of the original relay over the new relay.

Note: The GM relay didn't fit tightly in the old relay case, however the OE relay case did fit over the new relay enough that it would snap onto the female end.

Hope this helps,

Re: 99 cougar window

GTRaddicted86,
Thanks for the quick reply. I'll get on it this weekend and get both of them fixed.

Re: 99 cougar window

I have the same problem. My window works, sometimes. If I hit it hard enough it goes down (automatic), and to go up, I have to work the switch. It goes up in intervals!

I get a pretty bad electric shock from the drivers door ALL THE TIME, if I'm locking it or what-not. I assume this is an electrical short.

If I pull off the panel and pry back the insulation, will I see everything?

If so, how do I take off the panel! Sorry if this question is rookie!

Yes, if you pry back the panel and insulation you will see everything. To take off the panel, remove the screws on sides, then there is a screw behind the cougar symbol, and on at the bottom right(kinda hard to get to). I think that is all of them, and on a side note some of the screws are torx headed.

Re: 99 cougar window

My 99 cougar had the same problem, I replace the switch....problem remained...Look at the connector on the harness, the metal connectors had expanded and when the blades from the switch seated...there was a gap....thus bad connection. I used a small bladed flat tip driver and closed the gap on the harness connector contacts, dielectric grease and electrical connector spray to clean the harness connector....problem solved.
