Re: Trans not shifting!!

How do you know the speedometer won't work if it won't go forward in any gear? The shifter linkage is out of adjustment. Take the cable loose from the trans. shift arm. Manually move the shift arm on the trans. all the way back into low. Put the shifter on the console into Low. Tighten or loosen the cable adjustment so there isn't any play. Could be the wrong piston in the control valve. Trans. shop?

Re: Trans not shifting!!

Does your Explorer have the 5-speed auto or the 4-speed auto transmission? I don't recall if in 1997 the 4.0L came with the 5-speed or not.

I interpret your post to mean you can go forward, but the transmission never shifts into higher gears. Davescort may be on to something with the shift linkage, although you still would have an issue with the speedometer not working.

Do Park, Neutral, and Reverse work fine? How about if you shift manually into a gear, like 1 or 2, does the transmission find those gears then?

If the vehicle speed sensor is not registering, that certainly can impact up and down shifts. The vehicle speed is derived from the rear axle speed sensor via the ABS module.

Re: Trans not shifting!!

It probably is starting off in 2nd gear, it's likely in "limp home" mode which usually defaults to 2nd gear. The rear axle speed sensor is on the rear axle, near the pinion where driveshaft connects to the rear axle.
