Electrical Problem

My 1998 Intrigue keeps throwing the ABS light on shortly after it is being put into gear. Also, whenever the brakes are hit, blinker is turned on, the blower is turned on, or anything else that take some power, the headlights dim/flash and a few LEDs in the map lights flash on.

I had the alternator tested and does look like it has a problem, excessive ripple. Will replacing the alternator fix what is described above, or is this unrelated?

Has anyone experienced a similar problem?

Thank You

Re: Electrical Problem

Some newer OBD2 readers have ABS code capability.

The AC ripple (DC has no ripple by definition) should actually show a total field collapse to OV in DC (your connected battery is holding the voltage to battery voltage). There is a part number for the electronics for this alternator, but most just replace the alternator.

The two problems are unrelated and both are typical. Many clean the ABS connection but the code reader with ABS will tell you which sensor is the problem.

Re: Electrical Problem

Yeah, I ended up replacing the alternator, which in effect fixed the ABS problem. I read somewhere that If the alternator is not providing enough current it is possible the computer first shuts down ABS as it takes a lot of power to operate. All seems to be working fine now.
