98 explorer bad gas milage wit p0430 and p0420 codes

hey guys i have a 98 ford explorer 5.0 xlt. Within the last couple months my gas milage has got very bad. Maybe 10 mpg. The check engine light is on and throwing a p0420 and p0430 codes. Its kinda weird how they both came on at the same time. i know the codes are for catylist efficiancy but what are the chances that all 4 cats are gone. could it be o2 sensors and if so which ones would trigger this. Also would this cause my horrible gas milage?

Re: 98 explorer bad gas milage wit p0430 and p0420 codes

Both catalytic converters are blown, because of the P0420 & P0430 code.

1) Remove broken blockage from exhaust system.
2) Need a good ignition tune up including wires + plugs.
3) Clean MAF/IACT sensor with CRC MAF sensor cleaner.
4) Clean throttle body
5) New Air filter, fuel filter, and PCV valve.
6) New upstream H02 sensors for Air/fuel mix only, and use the old upstream H02 sensors down stream.

Need to get engine performing, befor throwing alot of money into new catalyic converters.
www.catalyticconverterwarehouse.com $250 per bank + $50 shipping
Do you need cat's in Mass?

Welcome to the forum!

Before shotgunning out catalytic converters that may not be needed, some diagnosis is in order. A quick search of the forum yielded this thread that may be of use.
