3.1 oil filter blowes gasket instantly HELP

2003 grand prix 149000 miles .started the car acouple of days ago on a 35 deg morning and the oil filter blew the gasket out pumping 3 qts oil on ground. since i have changed filter and blew again within 5 sec of startup. tonight i drained oil checked bypassvalve in block put in new 5-30 oil and another oil filter on startup i watched the oil filter after about 5 sec. the filter pushes ( bends metal) the metal mounting base away from the block and sprayes oil all over. i have been around alot of engines built my own race engines and have never seen this happen .any ideas or should i just replace engine .Thanks

It sounds like the oil passages are blocked and all the pressure is staying in the filter. To correct it you will probably need to pull the engine and pull it apart to check the passages. You would probably get better results by simply replacing the engine.

Unless the oil filter threads are stripped, a stuck oil pressure relief valve is the most likely way this can happen. Possibly a piece of debris has become lodged in this valve.
I think the relief valve in question is part of the oil pump itself. You could remove and disassemble the pump and free up the valve or simply replace the pump itself.

This has happened to me in the past (with Chevy 350's). The repair really is no big deal, imo.

Friend of mine got 250,000+ miles out of the original 3100sfi motor and tranny in a 96 chev lumina. Then he sold it because a back strut mount went out. From what I hear the car is still on the road.

talked to a coworker who has seem this before. confirmed what magicrat has said. the oil pressure relief valve in the oil pump is stuck closed and the pressure is ballooning the oil filter.
