any truth to this?

I've heard that some silicone based tire shines will cause the tires to actually fade over a period of time, and in some extreme cases cause the tires to crack? any truth to this?

i use the following product:

http://www.amazon.com/Armor-All-Extr.../dp/B00112NYGS

and have not had any problems (knock on wood) any insite would be certainly appreciated.

Re: any truth to this?

All I know is the stuff I use (armorall) attracts dust and when you wash the tires again that the dust is left on the tire. To get it off you need to scrub it hard with a brush and dish soap.

Re: any truth to this?

I use "Black Magic spray tire shine" occasionally and I also notice a brown residue from dust attraction. I would still like to know if this spray or wipe on tire shine is or is not healthy for our tires..

Re: any truth to this?

on tires, silicone based shining products are fine for the tires, but if used excessively, the sling-off can do bad things to your wax job and/or paint. Silicone based shiners are an absolute NO-NO on leather, it will ruin and crack leather in a heartbeat.

Re: any truth to this?

Other than looks the stuff protects against UV ray damage to tires.

For example or sake of discussion anyone ever read the warnings on Black Magic Tire Wet. Here is one of many.

"Do not apply to or allow product to contact the tread are of tires. Wash off any product that contacts the tread before driving vehicle. Failure to do so may cause loss of traction and control of vehicle".

Maybe thats what the ricers with the underpowered riceburners are using to do burnouts.

Re: any truth to this?

Haha, I've read that warning Bob. After doing further research it seems that the brown color that eventually appears is what also helps protect against UV rays. Cracking on the side walls is the result of the tires not being used and of course sitting idle in the sun as well.

Re: any truth to this?

good information. I was a little worried for a bit...

speaking of tire shine...anyone do a good spring/summer detail yet? I just did a claybar and wax myself today. Went swimming in the pool too

Re: any truth to this?

Speaking of tire shine, what is the best stuff to use (the spray or rub on stuff)? I've yet to try the rub on stuff. I hate how it gets on my rims and even when I'm conservative, it flings up on the paint. It looks great at first but then always trashes the paint and rims later.

Re: any truth to this?

i personally used to use the rub on stuff, but recently have switched to spray on. I have the raised white letter Goodyear Eagle #1's on my GP and with the rub on stuff the applicator pad became dirty and was causing the white letters to get all dirty everytime i applied the tireshine.

i never had the problem with it getting all over my car. i always apply the tire shine and let it sit for 20 mins or so before driving the car...that way it has time to "dry" a bit.

Re: any truth to this?

I use whatever is the cheapest usually. We seemed to get raped on anything automotive so I stock up when Target has auto supplies on clearence for 50% off. I have turtle wax ice gift set from x-mas with wax included I bought the whole set 2 days after crristmas for 9 bucks. Includes wax, window clenaer, tire shine, leather cleaner, and some terry towels all in a little convenient case.

I used to use spray on "no touch" brand tire shine. Its a little spendy, but damn did it do a good job. Its in a purple and white colored can, only available at certain places. I asked a local dealer what they used on their tires, and they said this stuff, so I tried it and liked it but stopped using it because it was so spendy.

Raised white letters. Didn't that go out of style back in the 70s along with whitewall tires?

Like Paul (JonJon68) I use the spray on Black Magic Tire Wet Foam so I expect everyone else to use it too.

What I do is after washing the tire/wheels is apply it, let it sit for about 10 minutes give or take and then use a rag to wipe any excess off. Works fine for me.

the Goodyear Eagle #1 Nascar editions. They came on the Jeff Gordon/Dale Earnhardt edition Monte's (though they had the limited edition RGL tires instead of RWL) yes, Whitewall tires went out of style in the 70's, though my grandparents have them on their Chyrstler 300

Oh! Oh! Nascar, it figures. Oh well as long you are happy with them.

How about post up your pics after cleaning with whatever brand you use.
