Jeep "races"

I have a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee. When I put the jeep in gear it "drives" by itself. I don't even need to touch the gas pedal. When the engine is cold it is at 1000 RPM's, when the engine is warmed up it is at 700RPM's. Can someone help me out? Is it idling too fast? What can I do? Thanks in advance.

What kind of motor do you have? Could be a possible TPS Sensor/IAC. My '98 4.0L did that and it was the TPS. I replaced the IAC too because usually that is the next thing to go. When that goes bad, the vehicle usually idles too low and sometimes stalls when idle.

If it is surging it is more than likely your TPS, which is mounted on your throttle body. There are two sensors there: your TPS and your IAC valve. Your IAC is larger than the TPS so you should be able to distinguish the two. Replacing your TPS should solve your problem.

Re: Jeep "races"

Thank you for all the info. My husband talked to someone at the auto parts store and they said what you have said also. He brought in the copy of these posts and said the guy at the auto store said they hit it right on the head. Thanks for all your help.
