SRS AIR BAG light

So I was driving to work today in my 97 GTP when my SRS AIR BAG light came on. I went to get breakfast and turned off my car. Then when I started my car again it gone. ABout three years ago this light was always on. Then one day it went off......WHAT GIVES??? Am I safe or is the air bag gonna knock out my teeth unexpectedly?

Re: SRS AIR BAG light

I would have a dealer check that out. That is, unless you have a thing for sudden unexpected facial impact! It could mean the airbag has deactivated itself due to a malfunction (loose/faulty sensor, electrical short, etc.). Better to be safe than sorry!

Re: SRS AIR BAG light

first thing i would check is the fuse. I wouldnt so much worry about it blowing up on your face...though i have heard of it happening before. GP's are notorious for leaking water on the passenger floor...if the water gets to the sensor underneath the passenger seat (or whetever it is under there) it can cause the airbags to go off.

The SRS component underneath the passenger seat is the SDM module. Sensing Diagnostic Module which is the brain of the SRS system. The airbags going off is very slim once the airbag light illuminates but possible. For the 1997 model year It is not uncommon for the airbag light to come on and go off especially when the weather is cold. I used to get it with my GTP.

If there is a concern take it to a knowledgeable shop or a GM dealership to get checked out.

Re: SRS AIR BAG light

Stupid question (I am full of them), the light has been on steady for 3 years then went off one day? Did it burn out?

Re: SRS AIR BAG light

Most likely the bulb blew. Mechanical problems don't fix themselves lol!

Re: SRS AIR BAG light

No the light was on continually three years ago. But for some time now the light hasn't been on. I did notice that its only when the weather is cold. I was just worried about airbags being deployed especially since I have the 97 GTP and they didn't lower the ejection power until the following year.

Re: SRS AIR BAG light

Most of the idiot lights at the IP are tested during lamp test at ignition switch to ON to include the airbag light/icon. It should either flash or illuminate steady. So checking the bulb is easy.
