Adding the DVD System

Is it possible to add the DVD system to an Uplander/SV6/Relay that was not originally equipped with it?I've seen a few on Ebay and I was wanting to add one. From past GM's I've owned,I've noticed that some of GM's vehicles came pre-wired for options that were not installed. Thanks in advance.

Re: Adding the DVD System

The discussion found at this thread might be able to help you. It appears if the van has the wiring and connector, it's only a matter of locating it and plug and play (posts 3 and 4 in that thread shed a little light on the matter).

Re: Adding the DVD System

Thank you very much....need something to keep the kids quiet...I'm actually wanting to put it in my Saturn Relay, which I just bought.I posted here beccause there is more traffic on the Uplander forum than the Relay. From the reading I was doing,I was under the assumption that all Relays' had the DVD ent. system a standard feature....this might be the case in the States, but in Canada I guess it is not.Hopefully that means the wiring/connector is in my headliner.I'll check it out in the next few days.

Thanks

Re: Adding the DVD System

.

I've read that many "newer technology" vehicles have factory radios built into their factory "security system". If someone tries to remove the factory Sound systems improperly, the vehicle's security system goes off. And when removing / reinstalling a new sound system, one sometimes needs the sound systems "special security code" as well. Without using its this security code properly, the sound system device "locks down" and becomes unusable.

If installing a 3rd party system (like a DVD system), I would ask an experienced auto electronics "speciality shop" to install it. They have all plug colors, they have many factory security codes and they also have previous install experiences. Let them "take the risk" of installing your new Radio/DVD/???? sound system device properly. And, they take the 30 day warranty on its installation as well.

If you still want to install your own 3rd Party Sound System (like large DVD Player with 5 disc loading system), I would locate & "tap into" the vehicle's factory speaker wires. And for its live 12 "+" wire, I'd run a seperate thick 12 guage "fused" wire to the vehicle's Accessory pin - located in its fuse box. When vehicle's ignition key is ON, then 3rd party DVD device is turned ON. When ignition key is OFF, the 3rd party Sound System turns off. Thus, eliminating accidental battery drain situations. And, one is NOT "tapping into" the vehicle's factory "thinner" wiring system - that could activate its own internal security system. Or, create "too much" 12V "" power drain create an internal fire. As a suggestion, simply install a thick 12 guage wire to vehicle's battery or to vehicle's Accessory Fuse box pin, and leave its thinner factory 12V "+" wiring system "as is".

If it were me, I'd ask for a few Auto Sound System install shops for their "install" estimates. If their prices are reasonable, I'd hire one of them out. This would be my first install choice.

Hope this helps....

Re: Adding the DVD System

One quick question...how does the DVD unit attach to the roof?Does it attach to the rails or does it get screwed on like the reading lights?I took the the 2nd row of reading lights off the roof(2 screws and 2 tabs)and tried to see if there was a connector in there but the hole was too small to see anything.Might be too much work to do this.

Thanks
