gas cap code PO 442 97 Lesabre

check engine light came on 2 weeks ago
I replaced gas cap when it came on, light still on.

but here is a problem with my gas cap, my gas door is pretty much rotted/rusted out, which caused the metal tube that receives the gas pump to rust out.
im thinking there is little chance of maintaining a proper seal like this.
Any other thoughts?
Thanks

If you have any holes in the tank filler tube you will get an evap code, fix that first.

Ok that looks like my least expensive option right now, it is pretty rusted out.

Remember, when you get a code, fix the problem, sometimes you have to clear the code for it to go away.

After you fix it, clear the code.

Replaced gas cap, cleared code.
CEL was off for 1 hr then came back on
auto zone coded 442 again.
Going to have smoke test done to identify the source of the leak
I bet it is the gas neck tube, it is very rusted at the top and the gas cap doesnt get a good seal.
But im going to shell out the money for the smoke test before I buy any parts.
BTW, you can get some good gas neck tubes from down south for about 75 buck plus shipping I found out online
