clutch problem

so this morning i go to start my car and i notice that the clutch peddle will only come up about 2 inches. and it's hard to push it into gear with the peddle all the way down. this has never happened before. when i pull the peddle out it just falls back down. but my friends clutch is like that so i figured i could still use it. after school i get in my car and it still does it. only this time it wouldn't come out hardley at all and i can't push it in gear. it took me 10 minutes to get it in gear and everytime i shifted it would grind cuz even pushing the clutch in all the was wasn't far enough for it to release. how in the world do i fix this/ what is wrong with it?

Re: clutch problem

have a buddy pull the boot back on the clutch slave cylinder and while you push the clutch pedal in let him see if it is doing anything (pushing the clutch fork) or just to see if it the fork assembly is hanging right. Dont crush your fingers either.

If it isnt moving the clutch fork when you are pushing in the clutch then you may have air in the lines in which case you can bleed it, you may be low on clutch fluid, you may have blown seals in either the master or slave cylinder, or something just odd.

There is a bleeder right on the clutch slave cylinder.

As for the pedal not coming up, I am not sure if it is related, but the return spring may be off, or broke, or need adjusting of some kind.

It is a pretty simple system so it should be pretty easy to diagnose.
