2000 Sport's Malfunction Indicator Light is on.
On Friday, the Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) on my 2000 Wrangler Sport came on and stays on each time the vehicle is started. The vehicle starts and runs fine and the MIL is not blinking - which according to the owner's manual could indicate possible catalytic converter damage.
I called the dealership where I purchased the vehicle (brand new) and was told to try the following: - make sure gas cap is on tight (it is) - disconnect the battery, reconnect, and if the MIL is still on, take it to dealership for service. I haven't tried the second suggestion yet because I wanted to know if anyone else has had this problem. Some additional history...Last June I had a problem with my speedometer going to zero while I was driving and the airbag light would stay on after startup. As a result, the cluster connector wiring and heat sleeve were replaced per a TSB that was out for previous years models. Another thing that has happened, but I haven't had it checked out, is that my turn signals will turn on by themselves without the control being touched. Spooky more than anything, but is it related to my current problem? Any feedback is appreciated! Lisa |

My wrangler is older than yours so I'm guessing that what you call the
" MIL " indicator is what I know as the " check engine " light ? If so, the MIL is telling you that the computer has sensed a fault with one of the engine / vehicle sensors and stored a trouble code into memory. Some auto parts stores can plug a scanner into your computer and retrieve the fault code which will tell you where the problem lies. Or you can have the dealer do it for a much higher price. Once you know the code number, you will know what parts to check first. By the way, on newer vehicles a code is triggered if the gas cap is left off or is loose which is why they told you to check that first. If I had to guess, I would bet you are going to find a bad oxygen sensor, let us know. |

Re: 2000 Sport's Malfunction Indicator Light is on.
Hi Wrangler owners. I know this is an old thread...I an looking to purchase a '99 4.0 Sport. While test driving I had the same thing happen as ldutzman..the speedo & tach went to zero and the airbag light came on for about 25 seconds. Since it isn't my Jeep (yet) I did not do any troubleshooting...I am more curious as to what may cause this. Looks like I'll be trying to hunt down Jeep Service Bulletins to tell whether this is something I'll need to pay to fix or not.
Any help is appreciated

I have the same problem with my gauges going to zero and my airbag light coming on, usually when I hit a bump or rumble strips in the road, my solution has been to give my dash a whack with my hand above the fuel gauge and it goes back to normal, makes me think its just a loose connection, not a permenit solution but better than paying someone and is not a real stress point.
