Power Window Regulator

Would it be hard to replace this myself. I am not too mechanically inclined but I can do some things. This is the third time I have had to replace this part and my mechanic told me I can't just buy the regulator, I have to buy a whole new motor. I don't really want to have to pay for labor again. It adds up. I have a '98 Intrigue.

Re: Power Window Regulator

I believe if its a front window there are a few kits available without the motor. Check around on Ebay. The price for a kit with a motor isnt really significantly more than one without one. Ebay tends to have the cheaper prices, I wasnt overly impressed with the quality of mine though, it was a brand id never heard of. It allows my window to move around more than id like. But it does function, and probably wont ever bind up because of the loose tolerances.

I replaced a rear one on mine, and scoured the internet looking for one without a motor, but never found one. The regulator comes with the motor already in place and ready to go.

The directions in my Chiltons manual for the procedure were accurate and it has some good advice. Id recommend you pick one of those up if youre going to tackle it.

For the love of Pete dont buy the parts from the dealership. If you can wait on it for a bit, parts online will be cheaper from someplace like RockAuto (dont forget to search for a discount code) or Ebay. Even your local parts store will be tremendously cheaper than the dealership.

First you remove the door panel, instructions are here:
http://members.localnet.com/~jester8...01FSpk.php.htm

Then youll need to remove that plastic sheet you see in a couple of the later pictures. It can potentially be messy, that sealant stuff gets runny if it gets very hot.

From there I cant remember the exact procedure, Id have to consult my manual, which Im willing to do I guess. I just think you should buy one anyway if you plan on wrenching on the car much.

The sealant on that sheet maintains its stickiness fairly well, well enough it will find any dirt you bring it near, so be careful storing it while you work. You might want to get some new sealant though, mine didnt seal well in a couple places. But I took the ghetto route and attacked it with a roll of packing tape (its inside the door panel, who gives a hoot).

Also, you will almost certainly break some of the clips that hold the door panel on, you can find replacements in the sort of miscellaneous area of your parts store, where things like window handles, etc are kept. If you dont replace them its not a huge deal, but your panel may not hold tightly and wobble, rattle, etc.

Re: Power Window Regulator

Awesome, thanks much. I will probably pick up that manual. I have a couple things I want to fix on my car that I have just kind of been putting off till it got warmer out.
