Gear shifter "button"

Auto trans, the "button" that you need to push to select a gear won't pop out. All the gears work, forward, reverse, neutral, park; but since the button won't pop out, I can't get the key out of the ignition. I've smacked it with the palm of my hand, but don't want to take a sledge hammer to it yet. But don't want to leave the key in it either.
Any thoughts?

The gear shift interlock is bad or the spring has broken on the shifter handle. I'd take it to a tranny shop and get their opinion. Have you tried squirting some WD-40 in there? Might help. Can't hurt.
