2000 Jimmy SLT - Starts slow & now dying on hwy

Hey all,

The past week or two, my Jimmy is slow to crank when starting. I thought perhaps the battery was on it's way out, or the Alternator. A few days ago, I started the truck, and my Radio is locked on me, which indicates to me, the truck was without power a while, correct?

Then today, it completely died on me on the Highway. I managed to turn on the Hazard lights, and pull over. Those were running, as was my clock (still showing locked). I went to power down my driver's window to speak with the Police officer (who saw me pull over) and it wouldn't work. The other 3 worked fine however.

Towed the truck to the shop, and initially the Mechanic couldn't get it to turn over. He claims the battery was dead, but this could have been because of the Hazard lights being on the entire time. He says he boosted it and checked for spark, which there was. He still couldn't get it to turn over, so he added fuel, and apparently it caught and is now testing fine. He wants to replace the fuel filter.

He wants to replace the fuel filter at $250.00 CDN, but in my mind, this doesn't sit right. Doesn't explain my rough starts, the radio becoming locked or the fact that my drivers window wouldn't operate after it died.

Anyone??

I have a similar problem with my Jimmy. When I first turn it on, I have to let it run for a few minutes, otherwise pushing the gas pedal just causes the car to lurch, like it's starved for fuel. Also, even if I let it run for a few minutes, I cannot get on the interstate and go straight to 70mph. The car will lose all mechanical power. I have to pull over, let the car sit, let it run for a few minutes, and then get back on the road. I lose no electrical power. My lights and my radio work just fine. I am confident that it is a fuel problem, I am just unsure of what the problem is specifically.

Re: 2000 Jimmy SLT - Starts slow & now dying on hwy

I just ran into a somewhat similar problem, I had the fuel gauge problem with the bad sensor on the fuel pump, then yesterday while doing 70mph up a hill, I lost all engine power but the engine was still running. Got it towed and it wound up being the fuel pump. Have your fuel pressure checked to see if you are at the 60psi that it's supposed to be on a 2000 Jimmy. My pump was only putting out 12psi which is why it died.

Does anyone know how much an an increase in fuel milage increase I can expect by getting the pump changed? I used to get about 260mi to the tank, and I'm currently at 220 and just between 3/8 and 1/2 tank? Considering the cost of the repair, I would hope to get another benefit than just the gas gauge working again.

Rob
