Is it.. the alternator?
'86 5 speed subaru GL... Engine dies at complete stop if I fail to give gas to car. Speedometer, and fuel gauge are the only things that show life on the dashboard, tachometer/oil pressure/voltmeter/temp gauge don't show any life.

Re: Is it.. the alternator?
Welcome to the forums.
All those dead dashboard gauges probably share the same fuse, which may be blown. Check the fuses (best done with a test light) and replace any that are bad. The fuel gauge usually relies on a different circuit for its power, and likely the speedometer is mechanical, which explains why they are unaffected. Your car has a carburetor, not fuel injection, correct? You carb may be improperly adjusted or is dirty inside. If it's the latter, the dirt may have blocked the idle circuit, and a carburetor rebuild is required. A bad alternator would not explain your problems. So, if the engine cranks and re-starts when it dies, your alternator is probably fine. |
