BMW Art Car: Andy Warhol M1 (Revell Germany)

I found this kit and had to have it since it was a BMW I also couldn't resist the fact it was a Procar (M1 in race trim). I wanted to do this in a pretty unique paint scheme as most of the M1s were in standard BMW Motorsports livery. I decided to replicate the Any Warhol Art car that actually raced at LeMans.

I studied photos from various sources and even got some pictures from the 1/18 models released by BMW itself. Warhol painted the car in less that 90 minutes but I would end up spending a lot longer than that to replicate all the 'finger paints' that he put into the paint
I built the chassis, interior and engine to spec with some stretched sprue ignition wires. I got all the paints I needed and after testing techniques on scrap plastic, I determined the best way to replicate the squiggles was to use a toothpick and scribe the still wet paint with the correct markings.
It took me about 6 hours to complete the painting. It was relatively easy once I got into a rythym.
I'm happy with the way it turned out even though the scheme looks like a kid did it in kindergarten The only thing I may add is the numbers from when it raced. The kit itself went together pretty well for a Revell.
And here is the finished product:

If you don't like it looking like a kid did it in kindergarten, maybe you can give it a coat of clear on top and polish it out a little? I am not sure about the texture on the real car but the real car's paint work should look more smooth when viewed from afar (5-6meters), like the way you look at the model normally.(25-30cm)
Painting the window trim flat black instead of gloss black also makes it more realistic.

Good job.

Thanks for the ideas. I don't think I'll clear it because I've had bad luck in the past clearing over hand-painted tamiya paints. They seem to bleed for some reason but I may polish it out. I think when I get a refill of flat or semigloss black I'll redo it because I think you're right.
It looking like a kid's painting is just like the real one so i'm not worried about that. I thinned the paint out pretty good so there aren't really that many globby brush strokes which I lucked out on.

What type of paints are you using and what type of clear are you using. If you are using enamels under or over acrylics then you tend to run into problems. If you are using acrylic tamiya paints, then you should have no problem with Tamiyas TS13 clear. Check out the faq and tutorials here on af as they are very helpful. Nice replica.

Thanks. I'll have to spend a weekend reading the tutorials. I almost strictly use tamiya acrylics. I've stopped using enamels so much because I like the quality of the results of the acrylics (plus cleanup is easier)

Very spirited!
That was quite a job to replicate the Art Car.
I've always wanted to do that car but could never find decals. I never thought of hand painting it doh! Nice one

If I am reading his description right, I am guessing he used tamiya jars (the X system) to hand paint the car and not TS paints. If that's correct, I'd be cautious about putting TS 13 over them (in fact TBH I wouldn't at all - just read a couple of the threads currently on the home page )

A far safer clear to use IMO would be either the Tamiya clear in a jar (X22) through an airbrush or Gunze Mr. Top Coat from a spray can. But I guess it's all academic because you won't be doing it anyway. or will you....?

Just my

Tamiya TS-clear over tamiya acrylic X-paint will be fine, just start with light mist coats (1-2 quick passes) then wait till dry. I even put automotive clear over tamiya X-paint and no paint ever got lifted.

I tried finding decal sets and I only found the map cars and some hideous 70's schemes. I then figured that since the car was originally painted by brush I would do the same. There's a video of him in action:

Correct. I used the X system bottle paints and I don't think I'll clear it (partly because the original wasnt either

Re: BMW Art Car: Andy Warhol M1 (Revell Germany)

OK, first : all my admiration for the courage, passion, efforts to do it: it's in my dreams like almost all other BMW artcars, at least the classics like this one , the CSL, the 320s.

Than the criticism, that I hope you'll receive in the positive way, may be, sharing impressions like this one or those about the finishing, we'll see a day a convincing replica in scale of this dammn subj.

Like I said, it's still in my dreams, but the challange is quite hard.

I'll say what I unlike/would like to see different in your job:

- Colors: they're absolutly wrong: also from the clip (thanks, cool) you'll see some very kind and well mixed colors, Warhol didn't just spashed color by the tank but mixed them carefully in cool/kind formulas: your yellow, cyan and green are too bright, need to be more "pastel", the dark red should be a kind of pink (I guess you mixed red with blue uh? but red has yellow inside... he used magenta... or better he got people to do those job )

- the artistic approach you tried is great, also becouse the lack of decals, but I have a couple consideration about:

- the finishing: it seems satin, I guess he used acrylics, without clearcoat, anyway a good coat of satin would uniform anything
- trims: whit this kind of "random/casual" livery black trims must be very sharp and very matt, to be a technical base for the artistic job, something like a surround on a picture

It deserve great rims too, just for this time I like extractor on rims, despite PE BBS and alu rims would be spectacular

at last: very brave for the attempt, with a bit of attention at thing like color tone I guess we'll see what we expect, finally.
