TV Bushing

Hi Guys I know I have seen some past posts with the pictures of that brass bushing upgrade for the tv cable. I just can't find them now. I've got an 89 model Grand Marquis out here with that problem. I did a temp. fix on it with a rubber bushing and e clip but it seems shakey at best. I am hoping it hasn't been broken for that long but who knows, most likely has. I am looking to fix it right so that's not a problem again. Car pulls good and will white smoke the tires in first gear. Drives fine in D. Fluid looks and smells bad although. The dumb ass who owned this car before wasn't too sharp. I have a feeling that the over drive is torn up. Will test drive the car today and see if hooking the tv cable back up solves the shifting problem.

Re: TV Bushing

I just took it out for a drive, and it did well. Shifts up and down fine in overdrive. I put it in OD and didn't touch the selector. Drove it down the mountain hoped on I 64 for a mile, got off at the next exit. It pulled great back up the mountain in town and then back up peastick hill with no hesitation. If the trans. was going to slip it would have done so, Those two hills are some serious grades to pull. I just won't know how much damage was done until I pull the pan and see how much clutch material is in the bottom. If any one has a picture of that brass bushing for the tv cable let me know. I am thinking I could make something on the lathe if I can see what it looks like. Thanks Guys.

Re: TV Bushing

Hi Steve

That must have been where I seen the pictures on lincolnsonline. I thought I was ok on that trans, but the more I drive it, the more I find out. It does ok on normal driving, and pulling hills. However get her out on the high way and get up to cruising speed 70 or 75 and then the slipping starts in overdrive. It won't slip yet in D. I checked out some over drive bands and they are cheep, even a kevlar one is avaliable. The problem is if I pull the trans out to replace the the band, why not just do a complete bench over haul and be done with it. There might be more damage than just the od band, and it's a complete waste of my time not to go through the whole trans. Hollendar is no help with this. I've got another good trans that's from a 91 LTC it's got the same tv cable set up. I thought it was an aode, but not sure now. I was under the impression that the 4.6 bell housing bolt pattern was different than the 302. I would sure like to find out. I've got one of those engine spacer plates from the 4.6. I need to take it over to some of my buddys yards and physicily see if it will fit the 302 block. If it does, I think it will work by just swaping transmissions. No more parts cost to me other than some fluid. The parts cost is killing me these days.

Re: TV Bushing

Hi Steve

I confirmed today that the gen1 4.6L trans bolt pattern is the same as the old 5.0. I've heard too many stories from jackasses that it's not the same pattern. Those stories are proven to be false. I guess those people are so smart they forgot about the early years of these motors, or something? Any way I was looking around my storage barn and found two more good AOD trans's and a possible fourth still in a car condition un known. That's great news since I could use either one of those four in this car I am working on. It was great to stumble across those extra transmissions that I forgot I had set back. Back when scrap prices were high. I sold a bunch of good trans's to my core guy, and hauled off a truck load of good ones that he didn't want for scrap. It's a good thing I didn't load up those Lincoln AOD's.
