overdrive problem

My daughter's 95 grand cherokee with the 4.0 has a problem when the trans. shifts to O/D, it tries to kill the engine. Feels as it is trying to lock up. Can disconnect the O/D with the switch and everything is normal just no O/D. O/D light doesn't flash or come on when it happens. She has been disengaging the O/D before driving and the trans works fine. Any ideas?
Thanks in advance

Re: overdrive problem

My 94 Laredo had the same problem 4yrs ago. Two days after the initial problem indication the transmission locked up at 70mph between Linville & Boone. The only salvageable part was the case. The cost of the factory reman unit installed was $3200. You might want to have a good transmission tech check it out.
