2004 Grand Prix Braking and Steering Problem Please Help

Hi I have bought a used 2004 grand prix gt1 car ..It was in some sort of accident but I don't know how bad since it was bought and shipped from CT..I Have this problem when I put on brakes sometimes I can feel the brake hitting and pushing back up on the bottom of my feet..this is weird and scary since my 1993 grand prix never did this...and it slides sometimes on dry road and in the snow..I know I need new tires and struts but could it be something else making this happen?Im really scared to drive it so Im letting it sit for a while..My screen was flashing service abs/traction, so I also just replaced the brakes rotors and one hub...

I have one last problem..its dealing with the steering ..Sometimes when I slow my car down and press the brakes and turn my steering wheel I hear this clunk or thump noise like its falling apart and my steering wheel feels kinda of loose or shaky a little..it happened the other day when I was turning up into this parking lot and putting on brakes my brakes hit up against my feet and my car slid a little then stopped..

Can someone please help me out and tell me why is my brake pushing back up against my feet my car is sliding and not stopping properly? And why is my steering wheel making a stupid clunk noise?thanx alot

Welcome to AF

Is this your first car equipped with ABS? The feeling in the brake pedal is most likely the ABS kicking in due to either slippery road surfaces (gravel, oil, hot blacktop, etc...) combined with slightly aggressive driving techniques (hard braking while turning is an example) or another hub bearing/wheel speed sensor issue if the ABS light stays on.

The clunk you're feeling in the steering wheel is most likely a bad intermediate steering shaft. It's the part that connects the upper steerign column with the rack. It is a known issue, and may be covered for free under a repair campaign through GM. Call your local dealer with your VIN number to see if it is covered before you spend any money.

Re: 2004 Grand Prix Braking Problem Please Help

Hi thanx for welcomin me to this site..Im glad to be here..I did look that recall up about the intermediate steering shaft problem but I wanted a second opinion..yes this is my first time having abs on a car..I thought my darn brakes were failing since I was sliding and the brakes were pushing back up lol.....I tend to brake gently when turnin so it could be gravel and jacked up roads in michigan causing the abs to kick in..and the service abs traction lights did go off after the brakes rotors and hub were replaced but I might get someone to check my wheel speed sensor out just to be on the safe side...thank you for helping me.
