Aveo + New Tires == speeding ticket

Anyway I put on new tires at about 41K miles. And within a week there after I got my first speeding ticket in twelve years. Now I realize it was a speed trap. But I do my best to stay within 5mph of the posted speed limit depending on road conditions and traffic.

So anyway according to my speedometer as much as I can recall at the time I was doing roughly 50mph. And as far as I knew I was in a 60mph zone anyway. Highway 31 between Waco and I-20 going to Louisianna to gamble. About 115-ish out of Waco, 171 miles from where I live. But I got a ticket for going 58 in a 45 and a school zone to boot. Not that I ever saw a speed limit change or school zone sign in that area. Henderson County, Brownsboro Police Department. Some old lady that looked like a dude. Mustache and all.

When I first got my car, I would get passed like crazy going 65 in a 65mph zone. And according to every speed clock thing I've passed my speedometer always read 3-5 mph over what those road side devices told me I was doing on the original tires. I guess this is no longer the case with new tires. Apparently it now reads 5-10mph under my actual speed. Not that I've passed any road side devices to verify yet.

So I got a ticket for going 58 in a 45. I thought I was doing 50 in a 60 at the time. And apparently a school zone to boot at 9pm at night. I guess I'll just go 50+ miles out of my way to take I-35(E) to I-20E from now on. $12 in gas is cheaper than $200 in speeding tickets. So much for the environment.

You can verify your speed with using a GPS that tells you your actual speed. These units are very highly precise and will give you a good indicator. My Aveo always reads high. Something like 70mph on the speed is only about 64mph in reality.

you can also use the mile markers on the highway. at 60 you should pass one every minute.

Re: Aveo + New Tires == speeding ticket

I don't want to do the GPS thing. Kind of pointless to have one if you're native to where you live. But I guess usefull if you're on a road trip.

The Aveo doesn't come with cruise control and I don't live on the flat plains of Kansas, so finding out if my guage is 5mph over or under my actual speed is gonna have a +/- variance equal to the inaccuracy in question.

Before I got non korean tires, it was consistently reading higher on the guage than I was going in the real world. About 5mph at 70, more like 3mph at 50-ish. Which is in question now that I have new tires. And got my first speeding ticket in over a decade. My first ticket wasn't as traumatic as I was going much faster just a few miles before I got my ticket for the speed I was doing at that time. This one was for going faster than I was going the entire trip.

Problem solved I guess. I now go 100 miles out of my way (round trip) to stay on the interstate. Takes just as long and is much nicer since I'm not slowing down to 35mph and speeding up to 60mph 180 times over 170 miles. Despite current gas prices, it's still cheaper than replacing brakes and tires and paying speeding tickets.

New Oem cars speedometer re set up with a little saftey factor.
The new tires must a been a few more in in diameter.
Your dealer may be able to reprogram your PCM for the new tire sise.
Or you might consider a Hyper-tech tuner and do it yourself.
Good Luck

.
Using mile markers and a stopwatch (a cheapo Casio wristwatch will do) is very easy. You do not need to live on the plains; all you need is a one-minute attention span required to keep the speedo needle at 60.

I used mile markers the last time I was in Montana, to figure out I was cruising at 126 mph.

Re: Aveo + New Tires == speeding ticket

Here in Arkansas everyone drives +10 mph above the limit. As far as I know the pd won't pull you over until you are above 10 over. I was coming home from work last night and was doing 35 in a 25 zone with a huge Hummer right on my tail. I was tempted to go faster and was glad that I didn't as there was a radar trap just on the next block. My last ticket was for dong 45 in a 30. Right in front of the police department. How dumb can you get? The cost of my last ticket was the equivalent of going to a nice restaurant 10 times. I'd have much rather had that. I've got to slow down even if no one else is. The 5 or 10 minutes I save is not worth the cost.
