Burning Smell From Rear End.

Ok guys i will try to explain this as best i can. My rear pinion seal was leaking, so i got it replaced. (also did the Rear U-Joint on the Drive shaft) While it was on the lift i noticed my rear brake Cover/Protecters where shot (rusted to the point that they where just hanging there). So i tried to bend them off, couldent so i cut them off. We rotated the wheels and could now hear a grinding. We assumed (couldent see where for sure)some of the gaurd was rubbing and that it would wear off?!? now after i drive it and get out i can smells as though something is rubbing. the Pinion and u joint appear good. could use some advise as i will be taking this camping within the next week. btw the rear brakes are drum, thanks as always for the input

I had a very similar thing happen on mine a couple months ago. My tranny went out and snowballed one problem after another it seemed like on a 80,000 mile vehicle. You may want to check the drivers side brake caliper as these are notorious for sticking and burning up. I had three blazers that did this, all within 3 model years apart. Gm dealers want 20 bucks for the dust shields so I replaced them at the same time. You pull your diff cover, take out the 8mm bolt/pin, remove the clips and pull out your axles now you you can replace your dust shields and seals if you choose, reassembly is just as easy. I would also put new calipers in at the same time. Carquest has has lifetime rebuilts for 30 bucks each so for 100 bucks you can have a complete rebuilt rearend. Now if anything goes out as long as carquest is around I have lifetime brakes and calipers at there cost.

Re: Burning Smell From Rear End.

Do you have the G80 code (locking diferential) could be found in glove box on sticker?

Did you re-fill with gear oil with GL-5 rating?

If any of the above apply and you have the wrong fluid, You will smell the burn.

I just checked the rear diff., topped it off (It wasent low)

I refilled it with GL-5 and i looked for the G80 Code, but i couldent find it. GL-5 is the right fluid right?

I talked to a GM Mechanic i know and he says it sounds like my parking brake may be stuck?

Re: Burning Smell From Rear End.

The parking brake symtom seems logical. Jack it up and check for drag.

Yes, GL-5 is the right fluid.

Re: Burning Smell From Rear End.

I think the brake shoes you are seeing are the emergency brakes shoes. 2000's had rear discs brakes, unless of course it has been replaced, but that would be hard to believe. The shoes and /or disc brake calipers have a knack for freezing up and causing drag and hence the heat and burning smell.

As I said in earlier post check the drivers side as this one for some reason goes first. I had a blazer that the brake dust shield was deteriorating and the residual was getting lodged in between the rotor and the e brake then locking up the rear wheel. I ended up replacing calipers, dust shields, brakes and new axle seals when this happened. Also when you replaced the pinion seal it's possible you tightened up the pack nut to tight and your pinion bearing is burning up.

Re: Burning Smell From Rear End.

hey there, the info at the bottom is from my old blazer sorry Its a 2001 2 door, i have smelt anything burning for a few days now, but when i was pulling into my driveway today, i heard something grind like worn down brakes, only louder, and it quick went away. im pretty sure its something to do with the brakes, it seems to smell the strongest from there, how would i know if it where the pinion bearing though? i will be pulling a trailer for memorial day weekend comming up so i hope this thing ends up being ok...

The first thing you need to do is pull the rear tires and inspect the rear brakes and see if your problem is in the brake system or the differential. As I said in my earlier post, it's possible you have a locking up caliper or crap is getting lodged in between your rotor and e brake system.
