92 with starter problems

I reluctantly had to purchase a reman starter from a parts store. I swapped the starter out and still no luck so I thought I got a bad starter from the store so I return it and got a different one it also did the same thing (sounds like the bendix is bad, just spins out) so I complain and the give me a new starter not a reman. Still does the same thing. I checked my flywheel and spacing everything is fine. My Rodeo is a 92 3.1 v6 4WD with a manual Isuzu trans. Any suggestions?

Re: 92 with starter problems

Do mean that the starter is spinning but not kicking out to engage the flywheel?

Very strange. I'm thinking there might be something else wrong. It's not likely that you got 3 bad starters in a row. I'd be looking closer at the flywheel and electrical connections.

Re: 92 with starter problems

The flywheel appears to be fine it’s fairly new because I replaced it a few months back when the clutch was replaced. I checked its positioning and its spacing to make sure it was lined up properly, the teeth seem fine not rounded or chipped. I even turned the engine to see it the starter would grab a different spot on the flywheel but no luck. I pop started it and drove it to a local shop to test the electrical components and they said everything was fine with the connections.

Re: 92 with starter problems

HI, It sounds like they are giving you the wrong starter motor! On v6 95 buick motor the difference between auto & manual trans starters are a washer-spacer behind the starter gear, maybe they are giving you an auto starter? Maybe go to a different store or dealership & ask if there is a difference between the starters or look at the original one to if any difference. You can check the starter out of the car to see if it turns over & throws out with a battery & jumper leads & maybe a screw driver, its been a while since I have done that. I hope this helps some THANKS GARYB!!!

Re: 92 with starter problems

There where only 2 starters produced that year one for Isuzu manual or automatic transmission and one for Borg Warner manual transmission. The starters have different bolt patterns. I’ve got an appointment with the shop that put the clutch in and he is going to check the back spacing on the flywheel to make sure the flywheel spacer didn’t move or break.

Re: 92 with starter problems

dag is right on starters have you tested it with battery charger when it's off the car? if it works right by doing that then do this hook it up but don't bolt it up but turn key over to see if it's just spining if so it's in your switch somewhere leading to starter.

Re: 92 with starter problems

That is really weird. Maybe when they did the clutch they turned the flywheel down to much and it got to thin.
