alternator rating

hey guys, i have a 97 GTP and i had a question about the alternator rating. as you probably know the alt is labeled to make 105 amps. i was wondering if this is at idle or at its peak power. also since my car has nearly 90k is there a chance that its not making that kinda amps? thanks

Re: alternator rating

No, the amp will not peak 105 amps at idle. Thats why your lights dim slightly when you come to a stop. Right around 2000rpms should be a good point to test alternator output.

And yes it is possible to not be near 105 anymore depending on the condition of the stator and rotor windings.

Re: alternator rating

mine was not producing 105 max on my 99' gt...i upgraded to the big 3 (ground to chassis ground to block and alt to battery) all to 1/0 awg then i reached 105...wasnt what i needed so i upgraded to a 250. If your lookin to buy a new one and want a bigger one for cheap just let me know

Re: alternator rating

ya i did 4 gauge for the big 3 and it helped a little. i was lookin to get a new alternator or have mine rebuilt and beefed up by my friends dad who builds custom alternators. idn if he has parts for my alternator tho so i might end up buyin one. i was lookin at the 200 amp alt on ebay for around $220 with shipping i think.
