'03 sunfire headlight wiring issue.

my buddies sister just picked up an '03 sunfire 2.2l with the ecotech, but the headlights (both low and high beams) are not working. we replaced all the bulbs and still nothing. the parking lights work fine, and the fog lights work, but only in the parking light position. when you turn the switch to lights on, the brights symbol lights up on the dash, but the high beams dont come on, and if you flip the switch to low beams, the brights symbol does not go off. so i know this is why the foglights go off when headlights are "on". so just curious if anyone has ran into this problem before or knows what to do/check. also, if anyone would knows what the output of the bulb sockets should read on an ohms meter. thanks in advance for any help.

Re: '03 sunfire headlight wiring issue.

I'd need to look at a wiring diagram to tell you what to check, as I think the headlights may be controlled by the BCM. I'll look at work tomorrow if I remember. The only thing you can check with an ohmmeter there is the ground wire. Should have 0 ohms to ground. Should have battery voltage on the other two when they should be on. Have you already checked the fuses?

Re: '03 sunfire headlight wiring issue.

yeah, i checked the fuses, and they are all good. i also forgot to mention, the car was in a minor front end collision 2 years ago, but i don't know all exactly what they replaced. you can definitely tell they messed with the wiring harness leading up to the headlights on the driver side though. doesn't have the factory tape job. also, i was just told the car lot power washed the engine before they picked it up, so im guessing they shorted something out there.

Re: '03 sunfire headlight wiring issue.

I'd open up the harnesses. A wire could have been pinched to bare copper in the collision and corroded over time. I've found all sorts of crazy things inside harnesses. I forgot to get the diagram today, I'll try to remember tomorrow, but no promises.

Re: '03 sunfire headlight wiring issue.

don't worry about the diagrams. i did just that today. i tore into the harness and found some corroded wires. so i cleaned them up, and they work great now. so thanks for all the help. much appreciated.
