Squeaking's gonna drive me crazy...er
92 Marquis- I slammed on the brakes the other day to avoid a deer, and ever since then, there's a strange squeaking noise under my car.I Had it on jack stands to find noise (rearend off ground). When free wheeling, no noise. When light brake applied- noise is back! When on ground and no brake applied...noise is there again! It almost sounds like it's in the driveshaft, but that could'nt be....could it? P.S. it doesn't do it in reverse!

Did you check all your brake pads? They may have been worn thin, then as you stomped on the brakes they either wore more off or ever tore some pad off and you have metal on metal. Make sure your pads are good and in place. If those are good I would then start looking at suspension components, such as bushings on stabilizers. Might want to even push the car up and down to see if it makes the sound. You said you free wheeled the rear, did you check the front? Your front brakes work alot harder than the rear, and slamming on the brakes can really heat them up. In turn this can warp the rotors.

Re: Squeaking's gonna drive me crazy...er
Thanks for the response. Yeah, I had the car up on jackstands and put the car in drive-no squeaking till I lightly applied the brakes (new callipers and pads) thus creating drag. But same thing happens when car on ground and no brakes applied! It almost sounds like it's coming from the driveshaft, but like I said, u-joints wouldn't make that noise would it? Driveshaft seems to be nice and tight-no play in it. Sure has me confused...and irritated
. That noise is pretty loud! However once I get up to about 10 mph, noise fades away. I don't think it's warped rotors, cause it doesn't make noise in reverse! The noise is only there when there's drag on the wheels via brakes or the ground...oh and also going forward.

Re: Squeaking's gonna drive me crazy...er
I have a rotor on mine right now in the back that was worn uneven by the pads being installed wrong prior to me changing them the other day. It's makes a low squeaking sound almost a moan until I get up around 30 MPH. So Monday I'll be having the rotors turned. I forgot to ask if, when you had it on the jack stands, was it supported at the axle or the frame? If it was by the frame you would have taken pressure off the drive shaft. But as for the u-joints, if they are starting to go bad (drying up maybe) it may not be bad enough to feel any play. My front wheel bearing was bad and had no play, just noise ( probably had flat spots on the needle bearings.). I would pull those rotors off and have them turned (it's probably the cheapest thing to start with and would begin to eliminate the brakes as a problem). Lift it up again by the axle, and have someone there to see if it is from the drive shaft or the brake area.

Re: Squeaking's gonna drive me crazy...er
Thanks for the reply SLAPNTICKLE. That's a good idea turning the rotors first. MY brakes were installed wrong as well, and I fixed mine while I had it up on jackstands. Yes it was supported under the axle. Today it snowed and everything was wet. I noticed that the sound went away, so that would make sense that the rotor was lubed by moisture and quieted. I don't think that wet roads would quiet a driveshaft!!! Thanks again, I'll try your suggestion and let you know what fixed it. This would sure be a good excuse to go get a new Challenger.....would'nt it?

Re: Squeaking's gonna drive me crazy...er
Yeah, yesterday it was raining and snowing here too. My noise went away to. Yeah, I'd like to get another rod to ( had a 2004 Mustang Mach 1 ). But the Friend of the court decided I had to pay more child support
. So for now the Mercury is my toy. But the mercury is like new, even though it is yrs old ( only rust is on the exhaust manifolds). I bought it off some old people that put it in a pole barn every winter and went to Florida. Only reason they got rid of it was, someone changed the oil and didn't put the plug in right. So I put another engine in it. I have about $800 in the car now, including the purchase. Good luck
