97 Transmission slipping at highway speeds

My 1997 Bonneville recently began slipping at highway speeds when in O.D and not. What happens is the RPMs climb as high as 4-5k at 65mph. If I stop for a short time and go again the problem is gone. It seems to happen most often when on longer highway runs (20-30 miles). The service light also comes on but I haven't had a chance to get it checked to see the error code. Ideas anyone?
