Emergency!!!

I have a 1995 Audi 90 quattro. Last night I went to wendy's to grab a bite to eat before taking m girlfriend home. I parked in the parking lot and shut the car off to eat. When I went to start the car again....nothing. No lights, do dash lights, radio or anything worked. It was like the car had no battery in it at all. After sitting for about 20 min. waiting for someone to come try n jump me (this is at 11:00 p.m. by the way) I get out and put something in my trunk. I slammed the trunk and go back in the car. Just for the hell of it I figure I'll try to start it again... and Wahla! Starts right up no problem. I really didnt think it had anything to do with me closing the trunk but me n my girlfriend joked that it will be a ritual for starting my car now (Ha Ha Ha). SO this morning I was on my way to school and stopped at a gas station to get some breakfast. I came back out only to find that the car would not start once again. After breakfast and a cigarette, I'm sitting there, trying to start it occassionally but it still will not give any sign of power. I say to myself "What the hell, why not try the trunk trick again" So I walk around the car open a close the trunk, and guess what happens, I go sit back down and the car starts right up! I have no idea what this could possibly be and any ideas are greatly appreciated. Do you think it could be my battery. I figure its not since it works fine after that without being jumped or anything.

(P.S. I hope you enjoyed the story haha, I tried to make it interesting)
Thanks,
Mike

Re: Emergency!!!

Sounds like a bad connection at the battery or a ground. Your battery wouldn't happen to be in the trunk, would it?

Re: Emergency!!!

I agree that it sounds like a loose connection. If the cables seem tight at the battery, remove them and inspect them for corrosion. If they are dirty or furry, clean them. If they are not molded battery cables but rather the type of terminal that has a couple of bolts that clamp it to the wire, throw them and the cables away and replace with OEM-style molded cables. The bolt on are intended as temporary terminals and allow corrosion to grow inside the cable at the connection and deep into the insulation.

It's also possible that one of the battery posts is broken inside the battery case and making intermittant connections. I've seen that before too.

Re: Emergency!!!

I'm not familiar with your car but most cars have two wires coming off of the battery, a big one that goes down to your starter and a much smaller one that powers the rest of the car's electrical system, I would check the smaller wire for bad connections.

Re: Emergency!!!

With a voltmeter it would be easy to diagnose the problem. Check the cable battery connections and the main fuse connectors. Probably a bad contact.

A Windstar without having the check engine light is not a real Windstar.
