93 Trooper Front tire locking

I just got my 93 trooper about a week ago and i am already having problems. The front passenger side tire locks up and you can not get the vehical to drive. I have had shops look at it and one said it was my breaks locking up. So I have all new breaks in the front, 4 wheel drive and been checked and rechecked all is good. Does anyone know what the next step is or have had this problem before.

Re: 93 Trooper Front tire locking

G'day,

First, sack your mechanic(s) - if this problem is still existing after they claim to have replaced the brakes then they are sadly lacking in mechanical ability.

Tip: do NOT drive far on hard surfaces in 4WD.

1. Double-check that 4WD is NOT engaged and that the transfer selector is in 2HI.

2. If you have manual hubs on the front, check that they are in the 'Free' position.

3. Jack up the passenger front and check the wheel for free rotation and wiggle it to check for 'slop' in the bearings.

4. Get someone to apply the brake while you rotate the wheel - does it lock and then release OK?

Come back after and tell us the results.

Re: 93 Trooper Front tire locking

tryed all your your ideas and everything is fine. there is no slop for the bearing when the break is applyed it locks and when it is released it spins freely. I have automatic lock hubs so as far as i am aware of it it working like it should. I have not shocked the machanic that has been working on it but that is yet to come.

Re: 93 Trooper Front tire locking

Sorry - I'm at a loss to understand how the wheel can be 'locking-up' if all of the above check-out OK.

Hope you find it .

Do you have abs on the fronts? If so, pull the fuse and see what takes place.

Re: 93 Trooper Front tire locking

I am hoping the problem fixed its self. The only thing I can think of was the e break was locking up. everytime the tire locked and e break did not work, but since on most cars at least the ones i am use to the e break runs the rear not the front. As of now so far so good thanks for all your help

Re: 93 Trooper Front tire locking

well I guess I spoke to soon. It lock up again this morning. I have caled a couple dealers in my area and none of them can tell me what the problem is. All of them said they have never heard of anything like it before. The thing that gets me is it will be fine when i get home from work tonight. Any more thoughts?

Re: 93 Trooper Front tire locking

1. The 'e brake' (aka parking-brake, handbrake) works only on the rear wheels.

2. You say you have a 1993 Trooper - did the USA models of that period have shift-on-the-fly (SOTF) 4WD? If so, does yours have it? Is it putting the vehicle into 4WD without your say-so?

Re: 93 Trooper Front tire locking

I do have 4 wheel shift on the fly. Took everything apart last night and found out my problems. The front locking up was do to a failing caliper and the rear is the e-break locking up. when this first all started it was only the front that was locking up after I looked at it more and ran a couple tests I found out that both were locking up.
