Ferrari 512S

I'll be starting to build a Testors 512S soon. Are there any upgrades available? Wheels, tires, photo-etch details, or decals?

Any building tips that apply to that particular kit?

Re: Ferrari 512S

Good luck.

As far as i know there are no aftermarket items that are meant to be used with this kit. HRM makes resin tire/wheel set for 512S-512M-Daytona that you can use with testors kit also, highly recommended. Also MFH has 70's Prorotype tire set. Everything else you have to scratchbuild. Decals, well sponsor stickers in those days were almost standard, so you can use almost any correct sponsor decal from any leftover sheet from 70's sportscar. As far as i know there are no spesific decals for this short tail berlinetta version.

About the problems with the kit: Generally the parts fit is not up to todays standard. Tires are horrible. One major issue is the shape of windshield. Side profile should be almost straight not as round as the kit part.

Somebody - maybe Alex Kustov, but I'm not sure - gave the kit a favorable review. But that was back in the day.

From your description of the tires and wheels, sounds like that set is a must.

Many thanks for your reply. (Not meant sarcastically. I do appreciate it.)

Re: Ferrari 512S

Haven't compared the two but fujimi also has for sale, a set of Campgnolo wheels taken from their own 330 P4 kit that might serve the purpose too.

Sorry, maybe i should have explained my view a bit better.

Body construction is quite tricky. There are seams on such places, that basicly you need to asssemble the whole thing before paint. That means interior too. Just my opinion, someone else might have better solution.

Engine compartment detail is quite limited, and the molds are old, so some of the detail is not that realistic. But there is a start for detailing if you so wish.

Those Fujimi Campagnolos are too narrow, and a bit wrong style, so i'd take the HRM wheels + Hiro Tires. HRM wheels come with white resin tires.

Bottom line, when built well, it does capture the look of 512S quite well (If only someone made vacform windshields). But building it well is a lot harder than most of the modern kits.

Re: Ferrari 512S

I have never reviewed Testors 512S kit as far as I can remember.

Gotcha. Thanks - I'm reconsidering my decision. This kit may be destined for eBay.
