Main seal leaking slightly
I have an 88 S-10 which is leaking slightly from the main seal. I was told there is a fluid (stop seal or stop leak ) that I could add to the oil which could possibly seal this leak (temporary fix). Does anyone know of this fluid and is it good / recommended to use? I appreciate your comments or suggestions

Re: Main seal leaking slightly
i used them in the past for trans,p/s if its a smaller leak they help never used on engine leaks but i'd think you'd be alright on smaller leaks.all they'r supposed to do is swell the seals up & if its a rear main a hell of a lot easier.Good Luck

Good fresh oil and filter is your best additive. Additive is just like snake oil or snake bite stuff. If you do not get the right antidote you can be in a world of hurt. What engine and are you sure it is rear main seal? Make sure where it is leaking first. If it is a rear main seal and not leaking much. Change oil and filter and. Drive it some and see it it gets better or leaks more. A lot of them years the seal will leak some and the quit. Watch you oil level close. The key is to not let it leak bad.

Re: Main seal leaking slightly
Thanks for the replies, I will have my son start start with an oil & filter change before putting any additives in the engine.
I was told exactly that, when adding the stop leak additives they are intended to swell the seal. That being a last resorts I guess. Again thanks |

Re: Main seal leaking slightly
My reccomendation would be to use a high milage oil. High mileage oils have a more robust additive package and seal conditioners that help swell/soften the seals to slow or stop the leak, depending how bad the leak is. In my opinion, one of the best high mileage oils out there is the Valvoline Maxlife oil.
